umbrella tree

I have an umbrella tree that I have let go wild. There are two main branches that are very twisted. The leaves are only on the very top of the branches. One branch has much better leaves and I would like to cut if off and repot it. Can I just put the cut branch in soil or should I put it in water until I see roots, or what should I do?
