I am pretty much single handedly planning my cousin's August wedding...and came across this pic of a decorated ceiling..and want to recreate it for the reception. I've already purchased a TON of tulle..and have a ton of white lights as well. My question is this...what is the best way to put it all together?? How do I make it look ike this?? What will i use in the centre?? How do I attach it to the ceiling?? We are allowed to use tape, tacks, staples and small nails in the hall...but which will I use??
Any help greatly appreciated,
:) Mel

She had a beautiful sage green which matched the bridesmaid dress and then for flowers she had a rust colored calla lilies it was very pretty she used a tulle type fabric and they were very nice. Sorry it is a little dark but this is what they did.
I know Jeep..its gonna be way too much work..but if we can pop out the tiles and thread the tulle through the supports..that'll definitely make it easier on us.
What colour did your DIL use for the runner and the chair ties??
Taht is what they did on the chairs at DS wedding and they looked very nice. DIL made them and she also made table runners to go over the white cloths and it was very pretty. I think the ceiling is going to be way to much work that is why the hall that DS#2 had left it up once it was there and it was used by many weddings.
Thanks everyone...I know exactly what you mean about the chairs covers...however, I doubt we'll use them..they cost $5.00 each to rent..thats almost the same price as the tablecloths..and robbery as far as I'm concerned!! I am renting white chairs form a rental place...so at least the chairs will match (hehehe) and I think we'll tie some tulle around each chair (possibly coloured or white with a gerbera daisy tucked into each knot) and that'll dress them up a little. I'll post a pic.
I think the hall does have a drop ceiling..so your idea just may work CG!! I'm really psyched that there may be a solution for us novice decorators...thanks so much for the suggestion.
Thanks,
:) Mel
Hi Mel,
I am just on a break from packing I move tomorrow... but here are a few ideas, Ok I know your said your using white table linens make sure the table cloth reaches to the floor it gives a much better look to the table than if its a short table cloth. If you can get them get white chair covers and you can get the ties to go around them in both pink and brown alternating them this will give that bit of colour to the table that you are looking for. I swear chair covers are the thing that make an event look professionally done vs. homemade I don’t know why but it really does put the finishing touch on the room.
In regards to all the tulle you have purchased there are a few things you can do, you can dress the head table and cake table with it use it like bunting, and then add white lights in wit it. Ok I know you want to do the ceiling the only thing I can think of and this is the first time in my life i am hoping for this but does that hall have a drop ceiling, because if it does you can use the T bars to hold up the fabric just pop the ceiling tile out and feed the tulle up though it and all you will see is one little metal bar. Does that make sense????
I have done some event planning over the years and the tuille to the middle of the room is hard to pull off if you haven't done it before. I too hire it out to the professionals. The rod idea is simpler with a great effect. Use hooks to suspend from the ceiling. Tape, staples etc. will not hold the weight. It will be heavier than you would think and the safetly factor is a concern.
Didn't read all the posts but if she loves chocolate how about a chocolate fountain?
Pearl...she already looks like that :D
To add some sparkle to the tables maybe a mirror with the votives like this one. or small mirrors with 1 votive on each available at most Dollar Stores.
The pebbles are nice too and you could float flowers with them.
I am afraid you may look like the icon taking on this tulle ceiling decorating in a short time.
Ok, we have a lot of stuff bought, and planned and booked. The bride and groom ADORE chocolate..so they chose chocolate brown and pink for their colours. Chocolate 3 layer stacked square cake with pink gerberas on it..simple hand-tied bouquets of pink gerberas for the bride and her attendants..brown dresses for the maids..pink for the flowergirls, all drinks served (aside from the beer and wine) will be pink or chocolate..LOL..and for favors, they are having a "Candy Bar" of all pink and chocolate candies, lollipops, etc. Guests fill their own pink cellophane bags. So far, we have an all white palette for the tables, I'll attach a pic of the centrepieces (we bought the vases already) and little votives scattered around, white linens, white dishes, white linen napkins. Hmmmmmm..I wonder what I'm forgetting??? We need some colour on the tables..was thinking about buying some brown or pink coloured sheer fabric (possibly tulle??) to do an overlay on the white tablecloths.
I think thats it for now...thats all i can think of anyway. I bought a sh*tload of white tulle (5 bolts, 54"wide...30 yards long) and have a ton of white lights. And while it may seem a bit "overdone" to you...we're cutting alders and decorating them with tiny white lights all over the room. As I said..people in outport Newfoundland haven't seen a lot of variety..most still use streamers and balloons.
So..there you have it...what else can we do???
Thanks,
:) Mel
Mel by the end of the weekend I will have a list of great ideas for you to do your self to transform your church hall in to something amazing.
I just have a few questions... Colours that will be used, is there a theme, what is the brides fav flower, and can you use candles in the hall?
:p :p :p
NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS JEN!!! :biglol: :biglol: :biglol:
CG, first of all...what an awesome job you must have!! I'm jealous. I live in outport Newfoundland..so we don't really have "decor companies"..we have a few ladies that "decorate" for weddings..that means shoving a few plastic ivy vines and a bit of tulle around an basically empty room...
So..we basically have to do this ourselves. Also..my cousin wanted to have an outdoor wedding (reception and all) but we were afraid problems might arise..so we convinced her to have just the ceremony in her mom's backyard..and have the reception in the local Church Hall. She said the only way she'd have it there..is if we could completely transform the place..so..I assured her we could do something amazing...and here we are... :p
This hall is not very big..but it is brand new, and there are only 65 guests..so the size works perfectly.
Please, if you have any suggestions that might help us work some magic on this little church hall..please throw them out at me. I'm more than willing to take advice.
Thanks,
:) Mel
I dont want it to seem like your bound to fail, its just a lot of fabric and a lot of time to get it up and back down. You will need a cherry picker i dont think you can get this job done with a normal lader, I have never been able to, you need to get a trusing system for it to really work, you can rent them from a party decor place. It takes a team of people to get this job done it will take more than a day to get it up. I always hire a decore company to come in and do stuff like this for me. I design the event and they make it happen for me.
ummm why are you back? :D
Good point about the fire hazard Luvto...I'll have to make sure we have a fool proof plan. And CG...thanks for your words...the hall has no restrictions at all about tacks, staples, and tape. Now I'm starting to wonder if i may need to look at perhaps a more simple plan?? I can't see myself giving up on this one tho...untill I'm absolute POSITIVE that I cannot do it...thats just me.
:D Mel
Also CG..judging by your post..I'm under the assumption that you may have done this..or at least have seen it done. You wouldn't happen to have any tips?? Other than the "you're bound to fail" vibe I'm getting from you??
Well, I can tell you from many years experience in wedding planning that its hard to do that treatment, and you may or may not be alowed to put nails, stapels or event tape on the walls of the banquet hall.
Mel, maybe the hall will have a hook or something in the middle of the ceiling for you to attach the tulle to. Make sure that there is no chandelier in the middle of the room and the tulle getting too close to the lights.
Also make sure that it is holding on really taut or you will be in big trouble if this thing collapses and there are burning candles in the room....just make sure everything is safe for everyone's sake. Good luck with your project.
Mel76, the second photo you posted seems like it would be an easier style to work with. It looks like the only real difference is that it uses two rods as the central draping point instead of a circle from your original idea.
Personally, I'd go with the rod idea because you'll waste less tulle length. (You'd have to suspend your ring and then bunch up and tie it off under the ring so you don't see a 'hole' in the middle)
The rest would work the same, with draping the tulle and stapling it to the walls.
Working with one rod with 20 feet of draped tulle at a time might be less of a headache for you and hopefully easier to attach.
Good luck wit it!
Thanks for the vote of confidence Jen!!
you can do it Mel i know you can...it's all in the planning and prepping just like cooking
Thanks Pearl and Jeep..nope..don't really have a plane "B".. I get what you're saying (I think) Jeep. LOL And I realize its gonna take quite a bit of tulle..and quite a bit of figuring...I guess if one hula hoop isn't enough..couldn't we suspend two at different heights (one above the other) then the tulle from the above one would cover up the bare ceiling..so we wouldn't end up with any "bare spots". Does that sound like it might work?? We get to start decorating 2 full days before the wedding..but I definitely plan to have it all figured out before hand..and ready to go up. And yeah...I guess if our original idea doesn't work out..I can go with something like you posted Pearl.
Thanks Ladies,
Mel
They had similar at DS#2 wedding they didn't put it up it was left from another function and asked if it could be left there. They didn't have it solid it was in bands of tulle. (does that make sence) They had one width of tulle with lights in it and then a space and another width. It looked very nice and they had it from one side of the hall to the other and stapled in the center. Each width of tulle was crosed over the other. Oh God this sounds to stupid. Ok they started in one corner went to the oppisite corner and made an X and then they made a + over the X. I hope you can understand what I am trying to say. :hairpull:
This may be a better solution for the ceiling in that rectangular room with the clear mini lights.
This is a BIG undertaking to get it right. I would for sure lay it all out somewhere the apprx. size of the ceiling you will be covering. Think of a hula hoop for the centre. It is light weight , strong and could be installed and suspended quite easily from the ceiling center with wire.
You would have to cut lengths of tulle and gather one end very tightly together and sew onto a cotton tape at least 1" wide. Then attach to the hoop. Of course the lengths will change as you adjust for the 25'x 50' rectangle shape of the ceiling. You will be limited to the number of gathered lengths that will fit aound the hoop.
So think 36:" wide tulle gatheres up to about 3" at the hoop end. So you measure the hoop circumference and divide by 3" as this will give you the number of lengths the hoops will hold. So say the hoop is 60" around divide by 3" = 20 lengths of tulle. Now will the 36" width at the wall end be enough to cover a 25" x 50" room ? Sketch it out on paper as you will have various pie-shapes.
BIG undertaking.......do you have a plan B ? :)
a pole burn????????????
Hey I heard that there's a new type of exercising out there --- and it involves a pole and dance moves. Should I sign us all up? I'll make sure our class is after we polish off all the wine and snackies at my house first!! Have a nice weekend, girls!
Thanks Kipper..for some REAL advice...you know how these girls can get so darned carried away....
I have a feeling we MAY be getting in over our heads..but it just looks so fabulous that we have to at least try. :p
We've decided that instead of doing the lights like the pic, we've bought "gazebo" lights..which is like one huge square of white lights on white wires..so it should be fairly easy (fingers crossed) to put them up in an organized manner. So the entire ceiling will be covered in an almost grid-like pattern of white lights...hanging above the tulle. (They were the only white lights we could find in Nwfoundland this time of year :p 0
I was thinking a hoop of sorts would work best...but then wouldn't there be an empty round area in the centre?? What would i do with that??
I found another couple of lighting/ceiling pics that are also awesome. I'll try to attach those. The first pic is a slight variation on my original one..but instead of the tulle(or material??) being attached in a circular shape, it seems to simply be draped from end to end and supported in the centre.
The second pic is just FABULOUS!!!!! I love it soo much..but it doesn't involve tulle at all..which is what the bride really loves. But..at least we know there is an alternative if the tulle suddenly finds itself thrown out the window...by an extremely frustrated overworked, overstressed, unpaid "wedding planner". :biglol:
So...I think with a little luck..and a whole lotta patience..we should be able to come up with something that actually resembles what we're going for..I hope anyway.
Thanks again Kipper,
:) Mel
I've never made a ceiling treatment before but, it looks like it's about 5 or 6 BOLTS of tulle gathered on a ring. Think like a circular curtain rod. It'll need to be a rigid form to hang from the ceiling. It doesn't have to be metal and done rod-pocket style, you could use a styrofoam ring form and just staple it onto the ring. That will be more tricky getting an even gather effect, so if you don't mind sewing a straight, but very long line, go with the rod pocket. You could try using an embroidery hoop since they come in many sizes and have an open end for slipping the pocket onto. Simply elasticizing it will leave it drooping from the sides unless you use about 360 staples to attach the elastic ring.
Staples will have to be used to secure the free ends of the tulle to the walls. Tape won't hold for long and tacks will pull out.
To figure out how much tulle you'll need, I guess you have to measure the WIDTH of your bolts and divide that into the perimeter of the room. It's the widths (or short ends) that willl be stapled to the walls. You'll also have to figure out how much "droop" you want to your bolts and add more to the area measurement of the ceiling you want covered.
If you hang your circular center piece on a rafter that'd probably be best. Be cautious if attaching it too close a light fixture... you don't want a fire. Perhaps suspending it from florist's wire would do the trick?
I think you're putting the mini christmas lights up on the ceiling , then the tulle over top, right? Make sure the wire on the lights is white or that'll really show through.. You'll need a million more staples for the lights too. Get proper "cradle" staples for that, not your typical flat ones, or you'll be risking some zapping, or at the very least, they might not hold them up.
I would venture to say this is a very expensive wedding project that will take HOURS to assemble at the hall. It's a good thing that the effect is stunning. I admire you wanting to try to tackle this.
hope this helps,
kipper
I wish I was as my inlaws and my own family are driving me nuts!!!!
Thanks for letting me know tho Cat.
 Mel
oh and how could i foget...go with leather instead of tulle :D
