Which way round to do colours for alcoves & chimney?

I'm going to be redecorating a room which has a chimney breast in the centre of one wall, with an alcove either side of it - my colour scheme is a warm cream with a medium olive/sage green (something a bit like the one in this room - http://www.dulux.co.uk/inspiration/roomset/green_neutral_living_rooms). I want to try and flatten out the wall so the alcoves look less deep and the chimney breast doesn't look to stick out so far into the room, but I'm not sure which way round to do the colours. Would it be better to do the darker colour in the alcoves, or on the chimney breast?

Thanks for any comments you can offer!

In your sample room the walls are all the same colour on the sides of the fireplace and that would work. This draws your eye to the fireplace. If the alcove walls are different than the walls surrounding them, it will compete.

I think you should paint everything all the same colour.  Otherwise, if you paint in 2 different colours, it will really draw attention to that wall at which point the depth difference will stand out regardless.
