window treatment for sliding door

Tracey's picture

I have 2 large, high windows and 1 sliding glass door in my kitchen/family room. I need to do window treatments for all three and since they all share the same wall, they need to co-ordinate.

On problem is that there is a bulkhead above the sliding door, so I would have to hang the rod only a couple of inches above the molding above the door. The rod would then be about 6 inches from the ceiling. I remember in previous Ask a Designer segments, Lynda Reeves saying that the rod should be in the middle between the window and the ceiling.

Do you have any suggestions on how to dress my windows. I love the look of tailored roman blinds, but because of the sliding door, I am not so sure this is very practical.

lookinto getting track blinds, they are other wise called soho blinds,
I think you can use them for both the windows and sliding doors.
you can use a valance to cover bulk head, or put track directly on the bulk head.
if you post a photo then we can see exactly what the windows look like.

I hope Iam getting this right. You have a bulk head above your sliding doors??? The bulkhead is approximately 1 foot in length? If you decide to build this window valance you would have to see first if you have enough room for people to walk in and out from the sliding doors. You don't want anyone hitting their heads on it as they enter or exit. If there is enough room for the valance then I would make it approximately 1 foot in length by whatever your sliding doors are.If the bulkhead sticks out further than the sliding doors (which I am assuming it does) then make sure the valance is as deep as the bulkhead. Cover the plywood with matting before stapling the material to it. Before you install it though I would install a rod to the wall for your panels, then install the valance to the wall using brackets.

Hope this helps

Carmie, can you build a window valance if there is a bulkhead right above the window?

Have you thought of maybe building a window box valance above the sliding doors with a roman shade pattern where you would get the roman blind look and inside the box on either side of the sliding doors long panels that you can close in the evening for privacy.

I have a similar problem in a guest bdrm. On the window I put a silouhette(spelling!) The window has the bulkhead. I am thinking of self lined drapes for the patio door because they face a sunroom. There is a small space between the window and the door and I will tie-back the drape there-hoping it looks as though it is for window and door. The alternative is to put the same room darkening blind on the door as the window.

Tracy, is it possible for you to post a picture of the windows?
Combination of Roman blinds and pull back curtain doesn't sound too too bad. Although, I think it would be nicer if you can have on rod that goes above all your windows with panels that when open rest on the walls that are in between your windows. I think the April issue of House and Home had a picture of a similar curtain. (I lent that issue to a friend to show something to her husband! Otherwise I would give you the page number. It was one of the contest winner's homes). How much space is there between the top of the sliding door and the ceiling?

Thank you Karajean.

Does anyone else think that this is okay - to have roman shades on two windows and then using the same fabric to have hanging curtains on the sliding door? The windows and sliding door all share the same wall.

The bulkhead is about an inch above the window so I would have to hang the curtain rod basically on the door frame molding.

Curtain rods can be hung 4 inches above the window frame if you have that much room.
I think that you could do roman blinds on the two windows and a different style on the sliding as long as you keep the same material for unity.
