We are about to paint our LR and Dr. I know from viewing this site for 2 or 3 yrs that Zinsser Primer is the most popular but when I looked it up online there are several different types of Zinsser. Your input would be most helpful. Thanx

Try BM White Rock (CC-40), Honey Harbour (CC-170), or Almond Bisque (CC-280) for a neutral look. Another colour that I really like is Butter Milk (CC216), it's a really nice soft yellow. Yellow reminds us of sunshine so it always brightens up a dark room. I had a condo once where that faced North and it just didn't have good light, I used Butter Milk in the main living space and loved it! It really did the trick and I also had black and brown accents and it looked great with them to. I hope this helps...Good luck! :)

My floors are laminate, gunstock oak. All the doors, ceiling and trim are white. I don't mind neutral at all - but one thing is for sure, I have to lighten the hall up. The only piece of furniture in the hall is a small black bookcase. The walls have brown framed family pics on them, mostly "collages". The baseboards are 4 12 in. cloud white.

Do you want another neutral or something different? What is your flooring etc.?

Anytime you want to lighten and brighten a space with paint you just have to watch the tone (how much gray or white is added) more than the colour itself. Give me more info of what you want and I'll give you more specific suggestions. :)

Thanks all for your input. We're going with the 123. the color I have chosen for the LR and DR is Barely Beige. My furniture is a mish mash of brownish colors (my mom's, things the kids made me - stuff I feel I have to keep. My problem is this: the hallway is just off the LR and kinda dark. - Any suggestions for hallway color.

I agree with Dawn, 123 is probably your best bet unless you need the tinting or extra sealing or coverage. 123 can also be used both inside and outside so really good to have around and will adhere to anything.

I like the Zinsser 1-2-3 formula because it can be used over oil or latex, and it cleans up with soap and water. They have a more shellac-based one that cleans up with solvent, but that's a little more heavy-duty than I need. I don't think I'd need that one unless I had heavy smoke damgage or tobacco stains. I read a review online somewhere that a guy found the shellac-based one much better for heavily damaged areas with those stains.
