2013 Trend: Modern Sherlock

A gritty decor take on a literary legend.

Checkered capes and magnifying-glass necklaces on the spring runways took their style cues from the world's finest sleuth. Today's look is clean and smart in pipe-browns and haberdashery plaids, all executed in sharp lines. It doesn't take Scotland Yard to trace the trend's pop-culture roots, from the BBC's hit series Sherlock and its American doppelgänger, Elementary. Pair Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams' contemporary redo of the iconic Holmesian tufted leather chesterfield with the wool rug Toronto designer Kate Thornley-Hall dubbed the "Dirty Union Jack."
