2014 Decorating Trend: African-Inspired Prints

Geometric patterns from ancient fabrics get a new look.

The inky, earthy colours of tribal textiles like Kuba cloth and mudcloth still conjure the organic palette of equatorial Africa. But while these ancient fabrics were once used as headdresses and upholstery for regal thrones, their geometric patterns are now enjoying a second act. The Kenya rug from Ralph Lauren Home is hand-knotted from hemp and jute fibres in shades of savanna gold and African mahogany. Kuba cloth pillows give living rooms the exotic allure of a tented camp.
