40 Winks in London

An East London Hotel serves up eccentric U.K. style.

40 Winks is a new, luxe-for-less boutique hotel in the city’s trendy East End. More home than hotel, it’s the actual residence of British interior designer David Carter. Before the designer opened up two of his guest bedrooms for overnight stays, his four-storey townhouse dating to 1717 was used as a glamorous backdrop for style and celebrity photo shoots. The decadent rooms (the lounge has been described as “opium den chic”) are dripping with personality — think Vivienne Westwood meets Oscar Wilde — and are beloved by the fashion crowd.
