To kick off the official start of summer this weekend, and just in time for Father's day, here are some tips to consider if you are investing in a new bbq:
1. Don't get caught up in BTUs (the measurement of heat). BTUs contribute to the overall efficiency of a grill but the key to great barbecue is even heat. A larger, deeper 'oven' is better for heat distribution, plus it will hold larger cuts of meat.
2. Cast iron grids are better for searing power but stainless steel are easier to clean.
3. Look for quality materials and finishes like rust-proof hardware, galvanized steel parts and a solid construction (shake a barbecue to see if it's sturdy).
4. The debate between gas over charcoal really comes down to personal preference. Gas is easier to control, while charcoal imparts flavour and that age-old feeling of being at one with fire.
