Digital Edition Questions

I don't have a digital subscription. Why should I get one?

The digital edition allows you to browse an electronic version of the print magazine on your computer, iPhone and iPad and some Android devices. You can flip through full-page and thumbnail-view pages, zoom in, get links to retailers and sources, search by keyword and more. See a sample to experience it for yourself. (Click on the "Inside" button on the cover.)

What is Zinio?

Zinio is an international digital newsstand.  It also offers Zinio Reader, a mobile reading application that enables you to download issues and view them even when you’re offline!

What is the best print and electronic subscription deal?

Order our Value Combo, with 12 digital issues plus a one-year print subscription, for just $32.95. You’ll save over 80%!

I already have an existing print subscription. How can I upgrade to get the digital edition as well?

Please contact subscriptions@hhmedia.com, and for just 50 cents an issue, you can add Digital to your current print subscription.

When I log in to Zinio, I can access newer issues, but none before December 2010. How do I access back issues?

Zinio only carries issues from December 2010 onwards. Individual print back issues are available for sale.

I’ve misplaced my Zinio password. How can I get a new one?

How can I view my digital edition if I’m not connected to the Internet?

iPad App Questions

What is the difference between the House & Home Digital Edition powered by Zinio and the iPad App?

Digital edition issues can be viewed on your laptop and desktop computers and, if you download the Zinio App, you can also view them on iPhone, iPad and some Android devices. In contrast, the House & Home iPad App — available now in the iPad App Store – will only work on your iPad. Our new-and-improved App issues from October 2011 onward are redesigned exclusively for iPad, with extra content such as iPad-only videos, slideshows and fun interactive features. The Zinio digital edition looks exactly like the magazine with pinch and zoom only, regardless of the device it's viewed on.

How can I get the House & Home iPad App?

You can download the free App in iTunes or in the iPad App Store. Once you've downloaded it, you can then buy an annual subscription or individual issues of House & Home from November 2010 onwards. Our new-and-improved App issues from October 2011 onward are redesigned exclusively for iPad, with extra content such as iPad-only videos, slideshows and fun interactive features.

What's the difference between the vertical and horizontal views within the iPad issues?

In the vertical interactive view, you'll see the designed-for-iPad pages, complete with iPad-exclusive videos and slideshows and other fun features. In the landscape view, you'll see the magazine pages with pinch-and-zoom functionality.

I upgraded my iPad. How do I get my subscription back?

If you have an iPad subscription, open the House & Home App and click on the Account button in the lower-right corner of the lower navigation bar. Then, click on the Transfer button to restore/transfer your issues. If you bought individual issues, they can be downloaded again at no cost. Simply click on the Buy button within the App, press "Download" on the issues you bought previously, enter the same iTunes credentials as you used to purchase them the first time, and they will be restored at no charge.

When I download the latest edition it says it's corrupt and crashes the App. What should I do?

This has happened to a few users that did the iOS4 to iOS5 upgrade rather than doing a restore in iTunes.

Unfortunately you need to delete the H&H App from your iPad (hold down the App icon until the x appears, then click the x) and install it from the App store again. (It's free.) Once it's downloaded, if you have an iPad subscription, open the House & Home App and click on the Account button in the lower-right corner of the lower navigation bar. Then, click on the Transfer button to restore/transfer your issues. If you only bought individual issues, they can be downloaded again at no cost. Simply click on the Buy button within the App, press "Download" on the issues you bought previously, enter the same iTunes credentials as you used to purchase them the first time and they will be restored at no charge.

If you are having any other issues with your iPad, try plugging it into your computer and doing a restore using iTunes.

There's no sound when I try to play the iPad videos within the iPad issues. What can I do?

Exit the House & Home App and go into your iPad settings. Select "General" from the column on the left. Under "Use Side Switch to", select "Mute." Then, toggle the Side Switch at the top right side of your iPad, next to the volume buttons, so that it's in the "On" position (no orange showing on the switch). Now, select "Lock Rotation" under "Use Side Switch to" and go back to the House & Home App.

Can I upgrade my print subscription to an iPad subscription?

Unfortunately at this time the print and Apple iPad subscriptions are separate and there is no way to upgrade or combine the two. It's something we're working on. In the meantime, it is possible to get a print and Zinio digital subscription combo for $32.95. The Zinio digital magazine is pinch and zoom only, but can be enjoyed on your computer, iPhone and iPad and some Android devices. The iPad App issues are quite different in that they feature enhanced and interactive pages, iPad-only videos and other fun features.

I purchased an iPad subscription but no issues have shown up yet. What should I do?

Thank you for subscribing! As soon as you subscribe, you are entitled to the issue of the calendar month that you subscribed to. Check the newsstand icon on your iPad to see if it's there, or download it from the "Buy" section of your House & Home App. If you still don't see it, you may need to open the House & Home App and click on the Account button in the lower-right corner of the lower navigation bar. Then, click on the Transfer button to restore/transfer your issues. Contact isupport@hhmedia.com if you have further questions.

Who should I contact about a billing problem with my House & Home iPad subscription?

House & Home iPad subscriptions are processed through iTunes/Apple, so Apple tracks the subscriptions and handles all billing enquiries and refunds. (This is the Apple/iPad business model, which we have to adhere to.) You can submit any iPad billing enquiries to Apple.com.

Why aren't iPad subscriptions free for print subscribers?

We completely redesign every issue for our iPad App and produce iPad-only extras such as videos, slideshows, interactive graphics and more.  This requires substantial time and resources. Although not available at this time, we hope to introduce a combination subscription offer for H&H print + iPad App in 2013.

The new issue is on the newsstand — why isn't it on iPad yet?

Our small team completely redesigns each issue for our iPad App and produces iPad-only extras such as videos, slideshows, interactive graphics and more.  This is why it takes about an extra week for issues to arrive on iTunes after our print magazine arrives on some Canadian newsstands. We hope you'll agree it's worth the wait!

We have more than one iPad in our house. How can I enjoy the House & Home iPad subscription on both?

The only way you can receive the same product on multiple iPads is to log in on both iPads using the same iTunes user (Apple ID) as the original purchaser.  (If you've lost your iTunes password, go to http://iforgot.apple.com.) Apple does not permit transferring purchases between two different apple IDs. You can log in and out of the App store on your iPad with multiple users by going to system preferences on the iPad > store > logout.

How can I give an iPad gift subscription?

Individuals have to buy their own iPad subscriptions using their own iTunes account/Apple ID. However, you can give them an iTunes gift card (available at most grocery and drug stores these days) and encourage them to download the App and buy a subscription.

Are digital editions of Special Interest Publications (SIPs) such as Kitchens & Baths available?

Yes! Kitchens & Baths 2011 and all SIPs from now on will be available via the Magazines Canada Digital Newsstand (starting May 7, 2011) and via a new iPad App available in the iPad App Store (starting April 2011). SIPs are not included in the annual print or digital House & Home subscription.

Free Mobile App

Which smartphones support the free House & Home Mobile app?

You can now download the H&H mobile App — featuring the latest decorating photo galleries, Online TV segments, recipes and more from our website, houseandhome.com — for iPhone, Android smartphones, BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7 and PlayBook tablets.

What's the difference between the mobile App and the iPad App?

The iPad magazine App features monthly issues of the magazine, redesigned exclusively for the Apple tablet, with extra content such as iPad-only videos, slideshows and fun interactive features. You can download the free iPad App in iTunes or in the iPad App Store. Once you've downloaded it, you can then buy an annual subscription or individual issues. The H&H Mobile App, on the other hand, does not include magazine issues but features the latest decorating photo galleries, recipes and more from our website, houseandhome.com. (Online TV segments are also available in the iPhone and Android Mobile Apps.)
