DIY Cane Tray Table

DIY Cane Tray Table - House & Home

Try this easy project for updating an ordinary tray table with woven cane.

Materials and Tools

  • Tray table (Ikea has several affordable options)
  • Pre-woven cane — fine open cane 1/2” mesh (2’ @ $10.65/foot for 24” width) available at Bamboo Bazaar by mail-order
  • 4 mm glass cut to size
  • Stain and stain sponge (optional)
  • Scissors

Step 1

Cane/webbing usually comes rolled up. Soak the cane in water for an hour and then press flat to dry. Once dry, sponge on a stain or paint in either a latex- or oil-based product, if so desired. The sponge will ensure that you get into all of the crevices.

Step 2

Measure and cut cane. Carefully measure inside the tray tabletop. Have the glass cut to this same size, or better yet, take the tray with you, as all the sides may not be perfectly square. Also be sure to have the edges polished so that they are not sharp. With sharp scissors, cut the cane to this same measurement. (Be sure that your cane is completely dry, as it will shrink in the drying process.)

Step 3

Lay the cane sheet inside the tray tabletop. Carefully place glass over top of the cane layer. The weight of the glass will flatten the cane.
