Illuminated Winter Garden

Ethereal, DIY twig orbs, illuminated from the inside, create a twinkling winter wonderland in a city backyard.

To create a similar effect in your front or back yard this Christmas, buy artificial wire or sisal balls from a garden centre. (These show less of the light cord than wide-weave natural twig or wicker balls.) Make an opening in the orb by gently pulling the wire or sisal apart, then stuff each globe with balled up strings of mini-lights with white or light-coloured cords. Connect the lights to an extension cord and conceal the plug within the globe. Finally, run the cord discreetly to an outlet.
