Placing Kitchen Appliances

A kitchen works best when appliances are arranged so that a person can move back and forth between counter areas in an almost circular fashion instead of linearly along one counter. In general, a triangular formation between the stove, fridge and sink should allow tasks to take place more efficiently. From here, there are some standard maximum and minimum dimensions with regard to counter space as it relates to specific appliances. These dimensions are helpful when determining the best location for any particular item:

An oven generally requires 15” to 18” of counter space on one side only.

A range requires 12” to 18” of counter space on one side and 15” to 24” on the other.

A sink requires 18” to 30” of counter space on one side and 24” to 36” on the other.

A fridge requires 15” to 18” of counter space on one side only.

Generally speaking, there should be about 30” between each appliance. Where an appliance is located near a corner, it is best to keep the distance between the corner and the appliance at no less than 9”. It is also usually better to locate the sink closest to the fridge, making it easier to wash produce before storing it. If there is a window in the room, place the sink underneath to provide a view during dishwashing or food prep. From this point, the placement of the rest of the kitchen’s elements should fall easily into place.

In a galley kitchen, a triangle becomes difficult as appliances must be arranged in a row. In this situation, it makes the most sense to place the sink between the fridge and the stove. This will keep the taller items at the extreme ends of the counter so as to make the space feel less crowded.
