Living Room With Mustard Accents
A contrasting palette lends a sophisticated look.
New York designer Steven Gambrel redesigned this gorgeous unit in an 1895 building off lower Fifth Avenue for a client who had just returned from London and wanted to channel the warm, polished interiors he had grown accustomed to abroad. Instead of decorating with staid period references of long ago, Gambrel mixed things up with 20th-century furniture, glossy painted surfaces and hits of colour. The result is a perfect tension between antique and modern. Elements of amber, gold and bronze were tempered with steely grey and icy platinum. "I like the contradiction of a super-saturated colour with an alternatively serene one," says Gambrel.
