Maité And Placido Arango's Living Room

French antiques mix with modern accents in this Spanish home.

"One of decorator Billy Baldwin's lesser-known triumphs is this apartment living room in Madrid, done around 1970 for a vibrant couple with three young children," explains The Aesthete — anonymous author of the now-defunct Aesthete's Lament blog. "I love it for many reasons, but mainly because it's easygoing and elegant. French Provençal antiques are part of the package, but the wide-fruitwood-plank floor, muted fabrics, and gritty modern art give it a gaucho casualness. You could be barefoot and wearing jeans here or in Christian Louboutin pumps and a glam cocktail dress."
