Checkerboard Marble Foyer

Coordinated flooring, artwork and accessories tie together a black and white entranceway.

The 1930s marble checkerboard tiles in the front hall of designer Sloan Mauran's house were lifted, polished and re-set during her home renovations. "This space is clean and graphic with the original marble carved fireplace surround and tiles," says Sloan. "These strong statements are balanced by white walls and the fan coral in a shadow box frame." She also removed the L-bracket mantel above the fireplace to make the clean lines of the stone more evident.
