Trend: Ivy League Style
The preppy look gets top marks for style.
Take an ineffable sense of style, set it on the campuses of Harvard, Yale and Princeton, and you've got the roots of the preppy look. While there are still fans of Oxford shirts, blazers and madras shorts, today's preppy look reflects a style that's more chilled out than buttoned up. This new take still has lashings of old-school verve, like a button-tufted chair in Yale Blue leather or Rejuvenation's McCoy pendant light with its painted-steel shade in Harvard's crimson. Penguin paperbacks come off the shelf in the hands of illustrator Alanna Cavanagh, who tints her screenprints with coffee and tea stains. Ribbon in varsity-inspired stripes evoke colourful D-ring belts — the perfect preppy finishing touch — while fabric from Ikea looks like a page from a class notebook. Study up, it's going to be a chic semester!
