“When I was on maternity leave with my son, Henry, I spent an entire year within the walls of my home — a dangerous thing for a designer!” says Emma Reddington. “I obsessed over every inch.” It shows. The popular designer and blogger, who documented the reno on marionhousebook.com, transformed her house from a staid Victorian into a contemporary jewel. She did it with a modest budget of $30,000 by keeping many of the home's original details — mouldings, doors, fireplaces, stained glass and a clawfoot tub — intact, while adding an eclectic mix of furniture, decor and art. Major changes, like the fully updated kitchen, were offset by simple-but-smart alterations, such as reinvigorating rooms with a sharp palette of black, white and grey.
