Updating A Small Bathroom

Updating A Small Bathroom

Bring refined sophistication to a cramped and dated bathroom with these House & Home tips.

Get maximum impact in a minimal space with these small bathroom decorating and renovation ideas. Best of all, you can do many of these things yourself in a short time.

Install New Tiles One modern option is to use oversized glass subway tiles on the walls around your tub and 1" white penny rounds on the floor, with light grey grout (since white grout tends to discolour quickly). Or, try mosaic tile in a very subtle range of white and grey for your walls. This will add texture and visual interest to the space, while keeping the look crisp and spa-like.

Consider new metals. Bronze, gold, copper and other warm metallics are very on-trend for bathroom sinks and hardware today.

Refresh Bathroom Cabinets. Paint these white or a sophisticated colour. Then, for an elegant touch, replace all knobs with polished chrome hardware.

Update Bathroom Vanity Lighting. If you have enough wall space on both sides of the mirror, streamlined hotel-style sconces will add glamour and sparkle to the room. Or, if the space is too tight, a double or triple sconce over your mirror will also work nicely. Most home improvement stores have a great variety of well-priced bathroom vanity fixtures, says Ty Pennington, host of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition". (Get more little-project tips from Ty.)

Embrace colour and pattern. A deep, saturated wall colour or wallpaper can actually give a small powder room the illusion of a larger, polished space. Plus, these small spaces allow you to create drama without throwing off a whole house's palette or mood. When incorporating wallpaper with a strong pattern, however, keep other finishes and accessories simple.

Try A Framed Mirror. This can add a trendy, eclectic touch to a small bathroom, often at little cost.

Install New Windows. Older windows can result in drafts, condensation and heat loss. Putting new ENERGY STAR qualified windows can actually reduce your home energy costs by seven to 12 percent.

Install A New, Water-Saving Toilet. The slender Persuade toilet by Kohler, for instance, takes up little space, and its dual-flush action can save you more than 22,000 litres of water a year.

Play With Details. A handsome shower curtain will add pattern. (Painterly fabrics featuring loose brushstrokes, large patterns and watery colourways characterize the newest look in textiles.)
