DIY Striped Dresser

Materials and Tools

  • Dresser
  • 120-grit sandpaper
  • Pre-conditioner
  • Cloths
  • Stain
  • Measuring tape
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Painters tape
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush

Step 1

Remove drawers and knobs from the frame. Lightly sand all surfaces and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Let dry overnight.

Step 2

Following instructions on label, prime entire surface with pre-conditioner. Let dry completely.

Step 3

Lightly sand dresser using 120-grit sandpaper to smooth any remaining rough parts and wipe away sanding dust with a slightly damp cloth.

Step 4

Stain entire surface (thin coats work best). It may take more than one coat to get desired depth of colour. Let dry.

Step 5

Replace drawers in frame. Leave knobs off for the moment. Measure the width of the piece to determine the spacing of your stripes. Divide the width of the dresser by the desired width of your stripe. You may need to slightly adjust your stripe width for symmetry.

Step 6

Use a ruler and pencil to mark lines for tape. With low-tack masking tape, tape off all of the areas you don’t want painted. The tape should go over the frame and drawers.

Step 7

Paint areas not covered by tape.

Step 8

Remove tape carefully, pulling it straight up before the paint is totally dry. (Have a small paintbrush on hand for any necessary touch-ups.)
