Elegant Black Candles
Lately I am obsessed with gold sconces and black taper candles. This often happens to me when I get something stuck in my head — now I can’t find it anywhere! I’m sure I’ve seen this perfect combo in countless magazines but a flip through my stash turned up nothing. If you’ve spotted black tapers in a gorgeous gold sconce, let me know!
A search through House & Home’s archives lead me to Canadian expat Thomas Wiggins’ foyer in his 18th century English manor in the U.K. It’s a bit too traditional for my taste but I love the sconces and black tapers flanking the antique mirror. I dream of this on either side of an awkward jut-out in my little apartment.
Check out the two black tapers in black candleholders on the top of Tori Mellott’s bookshelf in her old apartment. She was one of the impossibly stylish editors of Domino magazine — her space is more my style.
Leave it to my work buddy Michael Penney, with an eagle eye for cast-off treasures. He found these burnished brass sconces at a flea market. Can you see the price tag? It says $89 for the pair and I am in love! And they’re in my budget, which is even better.
Generally speaking, I have really poor timing. Now that Halloween is over, most black tapers that were around few weeks ago are long gone. I did track some down, and to save you the legwork here’s the lowdown. First off, white candles dipped in black dye don’t cut it. Point a la Ligne, a French candle company, as well as Canadian wholesaler Concord Candle make authentic ones.
