Once canned, these pears make a lovely gift.
2 cups water or grape juice
2 cups red wine
1 cup sugar
1 star anise
1 stick cinnamon or 1 tsp powder
1 tsp ground coriander
8 to 10 pears
Step 1: Combine water, wine, sugar and spices. Dissolve sugar over low heat. Cool, then strain to remove spices.
Step 2: Cut pears in half. Peel and core. Pack in jars without bruising the fruit. Cover with syrup. Seal and process, 10 minutes in a pressure cooker or 30 minutes in boiling water.
Makes 4 16-oz. jars.
