Fruit wines are making a comeback. This sauce takes advantage of new berry wines as well as fresh strawberries in season.
1 pint (about 2 cups) strawberries, stemmed and halved
1/3 cup fruit wine such as cherry, raspberry or blackberry (we used black raspberry wine)
3 tbsp granulated sugar 1 orange
Step 1: Gently mix first 3 ingredients in a small pot. Bring to a boil and immediately reduce to a simmer. Simmer uncovered about 30 minutes, stirring only once or twice, until liquid is syrupy. Cool to room temperature.
Step 2: Using a knife, peel orange. Slice out segments from membrane and pith. Gently stir orange segments into strawberry mixture. Serve over ice cream.
