1940's flooring

Hi,

I am in the midst of renovating my 1940's bungalow. After taking up the carpet in the bedrooms, I have discouver a "wood tile" floor. The tiles are about 2' by 1', about 1/3" thick. It looks like it was finished with a dark brown coating at one time, where the finish has come of it is more of a reddish color. I think it is almost a particle board or fibreboard but very fine particles. Each tile is staggered with finishing nails in each corner. There is definately a sub-floor under it.

Does anyone know what it is? Can I sanded and refinish it?

Welcome. Do you have a picture you can show us. I can't think of what that floor is but it may be some sort of underlay and the dark brown could be adhesive.. hard to say without seeing it.
