Hi all,
Yes, I have be seduced by yet another Craigslist deal, $150 for these two, vintage, velvet button-tufted slipper chairs.
Yes, they are 2 different colours (the green isn't as bright as it appears in the pictures), and I *think* they work in the room; however, the room now feels too full!
Help!
What should I do? Get rid of the orange teak chair? different tables?
I've moved all the furniture around & this is the only configuration where it all 'fits'... sort of.
Whaddya think?

Thanks for the kind words & encouragement JanetC! :) I am a bargain addict & like the challenge of trying to get disparate pieces to work. You guys are such a help pulling things together & reigning me back when I start to veer off into "let's call it eclectic, it's kinder than calling it a mish-mash" territory.
Gave this a whirl, but the trunk is too tall. The sofa is super-low and the levels just didn't work. :(
oh gosh i have so enjoyed this thread, i love love love when you are working on your room, the pieces you find are just amazing. I love your two new chairs and i think the teak one looks just fine at the table, that was a good idea. I had seen a vintage sofa on kijiji one day, thought of you, it was in excelllent shape and sold for cheap....i even wanted it. Keep up the good work :clapping:

All the more reason to have the black trunk in front of the window!! ;)
P.S. if you are looking for a cat friendly plant, try the Peace Lily. It's easy to take care of and while my cat does chew on its leaves from time to time...so far no side bad side effects ;)
As for the area rug, I would probably suggest you focus on getting some great throw pillows before you commit to a rug - and when you do, go for a solid colour neutral cream with some texture. I would also recommend not having the chair by the window angled to the couch but have it facing the other chair. The black trunk is also too heavy. What's the plan for the lighting and the window treatments btw???
Thanks Decor-ista! Cushions are definitely on the agenda, however, big square ones just don't work on this sofa. I don't think it's deep enough vertically (does that make sense?) or that it's too low. I've tried about 10 different square cushions on it, of various sizes & they always look ridiculously large. The rectangular orange ones I have in the pictures were an Ikea bargain & I'm going to recover them with a more complimentary fabric.
The coffee table is a throw-back to an old futon set I've upgraded from. I'm on the hunt for a "new" one. Here is a picture of a round glass one I tried & got rid of; it just didn't work.
Rug - pleased with the one I have - for now. :)
Lighting, looking for a drum-shaded floor lamp. Not sure if I want to go full retro & get one with a fiberglass, layer-cake style shade or if I might go with a cantilevered style.
Drapes ... torn between some simple linen roman shades or going with some lux, heavy fabric panels.
Too many choices, too little time, too little money!
Must be cat friendly. I have a very clumsy cat who adores perching on the trunk to chase squirrels through the window. :)
Hi Wendyp - I have been reading this thread & enjoy seeing how things are coming together. I do have a suggestion or two as well. I think that what is missing is something to tie all you upholstered items together, they are all similar tones yet do not seem to relate to one another. Try adding some large square throw pillows on the sofa that incorporate the greens of the chairs and the gold of the sofa. I also find the coffee table a bit too heavy - it has that mission-style to it- in relation to the chairs - love the idea of a glass or even a rectangular lucite one to add some lightness. Generally, when you have a lot of legs showing on the chairs & the sofa the legs on the tables etc can start becoming waaaaay too leggy!

I just looks a bit out of place in between the chair & sofa. Could you move it over against the sofa & use it as an end table?
I llike it!! Now all you have to do is accessorize the black trunk.....
Art books, candles, flowers/plant....whatever. (here are some examples) That will make the room look less boxy.
No dark is what you need.
Here it is ... dunno - it makes the room seem, boxier. Plus, I think the trunk is too long, I'd prefer it if it didn't have to run in behind the couch to fit in that space. I think a low table would be good there, but perhaps one that wasn't so big & dark?
Great idea!!
I like the idea of bringing the black chest in the room (every room needs some black) it grounds the room with so many wood legs showing. I might even think of replacing the coffee table with it.
With - totally!
I'm not crazy about your carpet (it's just not my taste - but this isn't about me ;) ) BUT... it defines the space and it pulls together & make sense of the two differently coloured chairs. Really nice!
I was thinking of back where it was before....under the window....between the green chair and the sofa (now). However, if its currently in a better (or just as good) place now you might as well leave it there. I was just thinking that the room could benefit from a touch of the black. Perhaps when you get a less deadly plant, and bring out the black planter you had, that would add the touch of black at that end of the room.
Again, I really love those new chairs. Glad they work so well in your LR!!
Although it is hard to see whether the green in the carpet and the green in the chair "go" together In real life, I would say that I like the room better with the carpet. IMO it adds softness and "life" to the room.
I looked up one of your previous posts recently and was wondering what you did with that nice black "trunk" that you had by the window.......and the plant??
Would you consider bringing them back?
Yip, the greens in the carpet are very close to the green of the chair, so I think it's a keeper.
The black trunk is still around, but moved to the right of the dining area - along the wall opposite the big mirror. I could bring it back in - where where you thinking?
As for the plant, it's gone - it was poisonous & my cat had begun to munch it's leaves. Thinking of replacing it with a more benign specimen though.

OK. Here is the carpet... I think I like it!
What do you guys think? Better with or without?
...
What is your plan for your livingroom furniture, do you plan to recover it or leave it as is?
Thanks Reginagirl. The dining area has been abandoned in favour of furnishing the living room. I plan to tackle the dining area next and am on the hunt for just the right buffet/sideboard that will fit in the space. :)
As for the recovering option ... perhaps down the road, but right now I don't have the $$$ to do the kind of job I would like to see done on them . Had a quote of $1600+the cost of fabric to just do the couch. Low funds is what is inspiring my used/craigslist purchasing scheme. I'm enjoying the decorating challenge of trying to make it all work. Obviously I'm having some stumbles along the way, like the giant teak char - but hey - it only cost me $5.00, so no loss if I decide it no longer works! :)
I think having the chair at the table really is a good idea. Unless you are crazy for symmetry I would just leave it as it and consider it a bonus to have that clear space at the other end of the table. This is one way to have all your seating and still make everything work in your small space IMo.
I love the new chairs! I think the teak chair works fine in the livingroom as shown in the first picture. I also think it looks great as a 'head of the table chair'. If you do decide to leave it at the table why not find a small bench style stool you could use at the other end? That way it wouldn't take up alot of room, you have extra seating, it could add some pattern to the room and I think it could help make all your rooms work together. Your living area is a blend of different furnishings and it kind of makes your dining area look bland. KWIM?
I agree about the mirror try hanging it vertically and use scones or an 8 by 10ish picture on each side?
What is your plan for your livingroom furniture, do you plan to recover it or leave it as is?
I'm crazy about those chairs you found on Craig's List, WendyP... and they look good flanking the living area like you have them now!
Sadly, this chair is a single (in fact, I've never seen another anything like it!), plus, I really don't think that there wouldn't be enough room to have one on the other end as well.
Hmmm, I am still inclined to try it vertically one more time.....then perhaps hang a pair of sconces on either side. Perfect for a dining area, and they would add just a little "weight" to the wall arrangement.
Here is a pic of some Eames era candle sconces to inspire you :)
I thought of that, but I think it kinda looked ... to skinny? Here is a picture of it from a different angle...
Hi Wendy,
First of all I think your two new chairs look great where you have them now!!! Bravo!!:clapping:
The jury is still out on the teak chair at the table, however. I think it looks better without the back cushion, but if it is not a practical/comfortable chair to sit on at the table it might not be the right place for it. (Unless its just for "show") ;)
Another suggestion I have is regarding the mirror. Have you thought of hanging it vertically....centred on the table? Just a thought......
I like it with the cushion but I only feel it will work if you have one at the other end of the table.
I think the head of the table idea works!!! Check out the pictures. The livingroom looks WAY better.
What do you think of the "head of the table" chair? It's quite a bit lower than the dining chairs & may not actually be practical for entertaining.
Do you like it better with or without the backer cushion?
Thanks again for all your insight! You guys RAWK.
About that chair-now that I've seen it without the back cushion I'm wondering how it would suite as a 'head of the table' chair with your dining set. How does the wood match up, and do the arms work with the table? If so, how about trying it with that chair at one short end and two of the set's chairs along either long side?
I don't get very much light in my ground floor condo. It's surrounded by shade-trees and then by high rises. Add the Vancouver in November factor & I really have to use artificial lights all day. so I'm trying to keep the colours on the lighter-side of dark. Does that make sense? I love saturated colours but feel limited by the light.
The head of the table chair... I NEVER would have thought of that but am going to give it a try right now. The woods are pretty much the same colour. ::D If it's photo-worthy, I'll post.
Thanks for the GREAT idea Dawn. :clapping:
I'm not very experienced with rug shopping, but I looked over at Sears and found this one. Am I way off, or does this look good? I really like it. It's bold, but it's not TOO busy, and I think it's got a modern look that really suits the retro theme in the room. The lines in the rug repeat the look of lines in the DR chair backs and the exposed legs in the LR, and the circles repeat the circles in the buttons on the upholstered chair backs.
What do you think?
