2 year olds room, ideas please

We're going to be moving our son into the other room because I am sick of him getting up at the crack of dawn. This room has one of those roller things that go outside the window and block out ALL light.

So, right now it's barbie pink. E tried to tell me I could paint it one colour, white  Nice try.

I have bought him some stuff already, limey green and navy, so I am mainly looking for ideas for what I can do to fancy up the walls a bit.

The room is about 10X12, I think, the window is standard size.

I like fun and contemporary stuff. I'll post a pic of my kitchen as a reminder for ya. Please do keep in mind though that in the pic we haven't finished or cleaned. And what you can't see are the 7 cans of diet coke on the window sill :biglol:
I also found these on the HD website http://www.homedepot.ca/wcsstore/HomeDepotCanada/images/catalog/2daca636-7ba8-48b4-a1d7-01b2208618e4_3.jpg

I DO NOT want Disney, or really anything cartooney. He's still young enough that he'll just live with what I tell him to. I plan to use that to my advantage as long as possible! I also have some letters to make up his name (cooper) that I'll paint to match, or clash!

darn delivery rules I say!!! Sandra C. your son's world map looks fabulous if not better than good old PB. I too adore the look of Pottery Barn Kids stuff but it makes me crazy I can't order it to a Canadian address. We here in Calgary are still patiently waiting for one to arrive. Sigh.
Love your son's room and also saw other photos you posted of your home. Absolutely gorgeous!

My son just turned two and this is what I've done so far. Not quite your style, but I thought I'd post it anyway. It is still a work-in-progress since we only moved into the house 2 weeks ago. I didn't want any character theme or 'babyish'. I got the idea for the world map from the Pottery Barn Kids website, but discovered that they don't ship theirs to Canada. So, I found something similar at World of Maps in Ottawa (well, I found it on the internet). It is 6 feet high and 9 feet wide. He likes the map quite a lot. We lay in bed and spell words (he knows the alphabet). Except he's convinced every word he spells out is "Koolaid"!! Since he has never had Koolaid, I have no idea where he picked it up!

There is a globe night light on his bookshelf which turns on simply by touching the base and is a tri-light. I found that at Linens N Things or Home Outfitters (I can't remember). It was on sale $25 or something like that.

Since we just moved him into a double bed from a crib, I haven't added the frame yet, but will do that in the next few months. Also, I haven't unpacked all of his boxes nor hung anything on the walls. I'll likely accessorize with animals or something like that. Haven't decided.

Enjoy decorating your son's room and please post pictures when you're done. I really liked how your kitchen turned out so I'm looking forward to what you do with this room.

Thanks for the ideas ladies!
it'sjustme, I love that! It's so cute :)
MrsModern, the link I posted is the vinyl decals you suggested, hehe. I'm near Edmonton so I should also be able to find a sign shop.
K, I'm almost ashamed to post this, but please just know that my head is full of grand ideas, but it's the carrying thigs out where I get into trouble. So, since I don't know how to work our photoshop program, yet, I resorted to just using my "paint". :p
It's not all that clear, but there are stripes of orange and navy in the middle of the wall. Then my sad attempt at ovals is supposed to be the vinyl stuff. I made it small so as not to blind you all :p Also, those colors are just what was there, I'd use different shades.

Hi,

It's IKEA shelving unit, lol. They have units of various height. Mine is one with 4 x 4 squares. There are one for 5 x 5 squares and 4 x 3. Finish are either white, natural or black/brown like mine. Very reasonable price too.

I too tend to think a neutral wall colour would work best and accents of colour.

My son's room used to look like this, when he was 2. I have since repainted it and turned it into a guest room. But he loved it, and was sad to see the train and tree go.
My other son's room is nutural BM Carrington beige, a light creamy khaki colour and then accented with dark red curtains, rug and cushions.

How about getting some custom decals in vinyl done up for the walls. Large O's or squares (simple designs) perhaps in orange. Most sign shops that do banners will be able to make them for you (depending on where you live I think relatively cheaply). I had a 4ft x 1ft red and white one done for my mud room that says Welcome Home. Of course I happen to work at such an establishment, but mine without discount would have been around $28 +gst.

Home Depot recently started selling appliable vinyl decals too. There are a few designs available, but I am not sure how much they are. I am sure someone else will be able to tell you though ( such a helpful little forum).

Post pics when you are done please. :)

Well, I have 2 girls..so I can't give you advice for a little boy..sorry. My eldest DD-she's 7 has a barbie pink room with a purple ceiling..she picked out both colours..and I must say, I love the room!! My youngest (3) had a yellow room with a dark blue ceiling that I handpainted stars on for her..but as soon as she got old enough to have an opinion..she decided she wanted pink too. So, rather than start from scratch, I left the upper half yellow, painted the bottom pink and added row of handpainted gerbera daisies in a lighter shade of pink right where the 2 colours meet. I painted over her "starry starry nite" ceiling..and handpainted another huge daisy around the ugly builder light. Both rooms are beautiful and both were chosen by my kids.(With a little guidance from me ;) )
I guess what I'm trying to say is...let him in on the decisions..and make the room bright and funky...my kids certainly appreciate theirs.
Here's the only pic I have of either room..the ceiling in DD's room.

I stayed conservative with the walls and furniture but bought funky beddings and accessory pieces.

It takes time for me to finish a room and I do have a house to furnish and decorate. So I just want a room that my 5 yrs old can grow into w/o having to change much except beddings/accessories if he decides he no longer want cars, trains, planes theme. This means staying conservative main fixtures, furniture. The decor and beddings can be changed fairly easy and less expensively.
