Suddenly, I like IKEA better than ever!
I usually get there about once a year and friends out of town have ordered items to be shipped. They found out Ikea will not ship glass and other fragile items as it has something to do with the expensive shipping packaging as well the chance of breakage. The shopping cart on the site will have an X on it if the item cannot be shipped. I also found out lately that some of the wood furniture items are made now in western Canada for Ikea. Bookcases, TV units etc. (This info from someone in the forestry lumber business.) :)
thanks for the tip. :)
just so you know....sometimes with Ikea when you are buying a large item like a sofa, you may have to wait a few days to be able to pick it up as they have to pull it down from the offsite wharehouse....if you want to be sure you can take it home with you on the weekend, call ahead and order it. That way, they have it pulled down for you and waiting.
As an aside, when we bought our sofas we also had to make 2 trips to the offsite wharehouse to pick up the slip covers.
shipping can be hefty. I am in London and to ship the Ektorp sofa and chair would have cost me $300. I am going this weekend, and since I won't have the kids with me (they will be with mom and dad) I am thinking I can fit the sofa in my van with all the seats out.
Janetc, Ikea charges $200. to ship to me. It would be worth the trip to save some of that shipping charge. Depends where you live.
A couple of years ago we ordered a large PAX unit for our bedroom.
I phoned the number first in the catalogue....and was pleasantly surprised to learn it was something like 40$ delivery charge.
We also wanted coffee table, but like Aan said, they wouldn't deliver because it was glass.
If I recall it doesn't come from a store nearest to you, but rather a warehouse in Montreal.
For the heck of it, just call the number and ask what delivery charge you would pay for your area.
We have close friends down the street and agreed our next order we would do together, that way it's even cheaper splitting delivery charge....
check it out...thank you for your help

The Ikea site will tell you if the product is not available via the website. This usually means they won't ship it. Good luck.
thanks aan, i wonder if it would tell you on thier website what is shipable or not, i never thought to check there....she wants some funky things for her room, and i find in our area there is very limited choices for bedding and such...she wants beads hanging in her door, funky pillows and a lamp

It depends on what actually. They typically don't ship breakables, however, if we're talking more durable accessories and textiles they will.
I'd put in a call with them about the specific items just to double check.
