About finishing furniture...

Loooong time ago we bought an unfinished table from Home Depot. I painted the pedestal and spokes and got as far as two coats of clear varnish on the top and other pieces.

It's been sitting for a couple of years and I've never assembled it (wanted to put at least five layers of varnish on the top to protect it from the kids)

I'd like to "refinish" it--remove the paint and re-varnish it in Cherry. Is it too late?

Can I continue with the varnishing of the top--but in a cherry stained varnish? Or will that not work because of the two thin coats already on it?

What do you tink? Do I need to strip back to bear wood--or can I take a shortcut?
Thanks!

I was afraid there's be no shortcut, lol!

We do have a Lee Valley--I can ask them, thanks for the lead!

if you have a Lee Valley anywhere near you go talk to them about the products available to use...the staff there are fabulous in their knowledge base and have a ton of ideas.

if you are going to stain the table you are going to have to strip the varnish back to the wood to enable the stain to absorb. If you are painting, a rough sand and a good primer is all you need.
