I always grow a herb garden in an oval pot with parsley, sweet basil, chives & rosemary.......Cherry tomatoes always do well in a large patio pot.:)
If you are thinking about a vegetable garden, then here are a few tips based on my own experience. I have been trying to find a photo of my little garden in the fall but I can only find the spring photo. It started small but got much bigger. Anyway, it gives you a little idea. I ended up with larger pots on the deck but these smaller plants were for the larger portion of herbs. (thyme, sage, rosemary, savory, parsley etc.)
Things to remember:
Some plants grow better in containers than others. Carrots, cucumbers, herbs, salad and tomatoes do well. You need to be careful that your pot is large enough for your tomatoes and I have seen some people plant "salad" pots. They have the cucumber and tomatoes in the same pot. Also, avoid dark coloured pots as they seem to attract and retain more heat. You have to check your watering since pots do tend to dry out faster and your plants will get thirsty faster since their supply is limited. Look for dwarf varieties. I made that mistake with my tomatoes and it became a bit jungle-like for me the first time I tried to grow tomatoes.
Anyway, good luck.
