This is essentially a Playroom for my two young kids. It's next to our living room, so I've tried to decorate so that it's not a complete and total eyesore.
First of all, I'd take any general suggestion for improvement, subject to the following: 1) the two tall cabinets flanking the window must stay (for now) -- They are filled with toys. 2) Same goes for the white coffee table (filled with Lego and crayons).
Does anyone think I need to put something on top of those cabinets (vase? Art object?) I'm trying to resist the urge to fill up space "just because".
Secondly -- and more importantly -- I've been living with "builder's beige" for a year, and it's time to repaint. Anyone have suggestions for a colour? I love bold colours, and my first inclination is for a brownish-red, but in the entrance hallway we already have a deep, rich red, so that may be too much. My second instinct is for a deep warm brown like the floor, but I'm just not sure. I also have to be mindful of the colours in the room next door, since it's so open.

Nice job JenJen, I like all of those, but I especially like the grey.
BTW, what do you use for your mock ups?
some more.....
I understand what you are going through with having a space for the kids and keeping it more or less nice and not looking like a daycare!!
:)
It didn't start off as a Playroom (and in fact, they have a large, kid-friendly space full of toys in the basement), but no matter what we did, this is where the the kids gravitated to. What can you do? :)
There is a special kind of paint that you can use to piant laminate products. I think with a few coats of that it would be fine. I never used to like grey either but now thats what colour I am painting my bedroom.
Oh one other suggestion.... I would change the handles on the doors to something in a silver finish.
Condogirl, thanks for the mock-up. I'm usually not a fan of grey whatsoever, but that looks much nicer than I'd have expected. Now you've got me thinking... :)
The cabinets are just from IKEA, so I could easily swap out the doors for plain white ones, but the sides would have to be painted. Anyone have success at painting (cheap) IKEA furniture before?
Here is a mock up using Old Pewter by BM and Ultra white from BM on the cabinets. I think bugrandy would look great as the accent colour with what I have just mocked up...
I just did, and if I'm not mistaken, it's the same (beautiful) colour I already have in my entrance hallway (visible in one of the photos). I think I'd have to go with another colour entirely for this room.
Also, the photos I've provided are admittedly crappy, but I should mention that all of the accents are currently dark burgundy.
thanks jenjen, for the life of me, i couldnt remember the title of that post DUH! and i bet smoodgie is running scared lol should have been done by now

take a look at a thread called ''My red wall is done''...and you can see Smoodgies red wall...or she can post an updated pic for ya...she can also do a mock up for you with something on top of your cabinet...right Smoodgie!!!...or do i need to get the whip again!?!?!?..... :D
with everything condo has said, paint out the cabinets, and ask smoodgie to post her living room, she has a red accent wall and a nice color on the other walls that is stunning with the red

What a nice space!
I don't really have any advice for color, trying to figure that out myself...but I understand what you are going through with having a space for the kids and keeping it more or less nice and not looking like a daycare!!
I can't wait to hear what other have to suggest. :)
Thanks,
I would paint the cabinets out white to match your mantel and your coffee table. I think that would really help to make them more a part of the room. I would not put anythign on top of them. I like the clean look you have going there now. Plus there are rather high, so it would not be at eye level for anyone to see what you have put up there.
As for a wall colour, I noticed that you can see the red in the hall, so it needs to completment it, a warm grey might be nice or maybe a deep sand colour. My first choice would be an ice blue, but I am not sure that works with the red in the hall.
thanks,
Done. Hope that's better.
Can you make the pics a little bigger its really hard to see all thats going on in the room with them that small.
thanks,
