i am looking to plant some compact shrubs in front of my basement windows in order to deter attempted break-ins. 3 feet high ought to be good. something prickly, thorny, dense it doesn't matter. just hard to get through. i have holly out there now......but it grows soooooooooooo slow *LOL* so something that grows quicker. shade in the morning....full afternoon sun.

What about roses? They should do well with afternoon sun. The explorer roses have some nasty thorns.

How about something from the Juniper family. They certainly are prickly and many are fast growing and sun-loving. A quick look through one of my books recommended "Gold Star"- 3ft high and 6ft wide or "old Gold". The little tags at the nursery will indicate mature size. I realize that junipers are not the most exciting plants in the world, but these ones meet your criteria.
Good luck!
