Air Exchange question

Kindernut's picture

We have an air exchange and I'm truly not sure how it works!?! It is cool downstairs and hot upstairs and the fan is not kicking in. So... the air stays cool downstairs and air hot upstairs. What do I do? Thanks for your help. :)

Yup, go see if you have a fan switch either on the furnace or your wall by the thermostat. Turning that on will circulate the air in the house and bring that cool air up. In summer it's nice to have it one for a couple of hours when the house is hot and basement is cool as you can use that cool air.

BTW, not all furnaces have them (as I discovered when I went to turn on the one in this house). They are an 'extra' you can have added for a couple of hundred unless you know someone who knows how to wire one up.

You can turn the furnace fan on to recirculate the air and mix the cold basement air with the hotter upstairs air.
The air exchanger is to bring fresh air from outside and remove stale air from the newer more air tight homes.

We had an air exchanger in our last house but it had nothing to do with cooling the house. It was meant to circulate the air to keep the moisture level even in the house. I don't think it will help with cool and hot.
