Air Purifiers

Does anyone have an air purifier in their home. DH suffers with stuffed up head all winter when we start burning wood heat. I think it is the soot and dust in the air and wonder if there isn't something out there that would help. I hate searching the internet you never know if you are just getting another infomerical.

If you are talking about air purifiers for the room (vs being attached to the furnace) I have used various types. I really like the ones that ionize (never buy a pure ionizer without a fan as your house will get filthy as the dust just goes and sticks to whatever is near vs getting caught in a filter) while they are at it but some work better than others and some nearly kill you in cost of filters. I also have tried the hepa type but somehow they didn't seem as effective but maybe that was just a matter of which unit it is as they are supposed to be good.

Lately I tried a little inexpensive unit that uses just water http://www.thermaxaf.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=781 I got mine at TSC when they were a showstopper and it amazes me to see how filthy the water gets in pretty short order so it's doing something. I also like not paying for filters. so far I'm pretty happy with the simplicity given I've had a few different types of air purifiers over the last 20+ years. I think they run about $40 for big ones or you can get little bitty units for about $20 which might be helpful as your hubby could sit one right near him or the source of the problem.

My mom had a lot of allergies and asthma and had one of the big units attached to the furnace. The problem is it's only useful when the furnace is blowing and it was a bit noisy if it got particles in it (zapping noises). I didn't think it made a lot of difference and she still complained about dust etc. in the house. Of course it only cleans what goes through the furnace so a bit of short coming there.

I also have a tower cleaner/fan which I really like (it has a remote control and everything so I keep it in my bedroom and can use it or stop it from bed). I think it came from Linens N Things which is no help to you at all.

With any unit you are considering, you have to look up what you can find on them on the web. Seeing what others think or experienced is really key as they are not all equal. I think you can get really decent air cleaners from $40 - $300 depending on what you need (size of room etc.) but it does take some looking and research so you don't get a dud. Heaven knows they all look about the same and make the same claims.

One thing you need to know is to move the air through the filters it means they have a bit of noise and many some real air flow (breeze). I'm so used to it I never notice and I love the breeze. Again, some are better than others at being quieter.
