Industrial chemical that tainted pet food found in 2nd ingredient, expanding recall[/B]

WASHINGTON (AP) - An industrial chemical that led to a recall of more than 100 brands of cat and dog foods has been found to contaminate a second pet food ingredient, expanding the recall further.
The chemical, melamine, is believed to have contaminated rice protein concentrate used to make a variety of Natural Balance Pet Foods products for both dogs and cats, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.
Previously, the chemical was found to contaminate another ingredient, wheat gluten, used by at least six other pet food and treat manufacturers.
Natural Balance said it was recalling all its Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, its Venison and Brown Rice dog treats and its Venison and Green Pea dry cat food.
The Pacoima, Calif., company said recent laboratory tests showed the products contain melamine. It believes the source of the contaminant was rice protein concentrate, which the company recently added to the dry venison formulas. Natural Balance does not use wheat gluten, which was associated with the previous melamine contamination, it said.
Last month, Menu Foods of Mississauga, Ont. (TSX:MEW.UN), recalled 60 million cans of dog and cat food after the deaths of 16 pets, mostly cats, that ate its products. The FDA said tests indicated the food was contaminated with melamine, used in making plastics and other industrial processes.
Five other companies later recalled pet products also made with wheat gluten tainted by the chemical.
The FDA has since blocked Chinese imports of wheat gluten. An FDA spokeswoman did not immediately return messages left seeking comment.

We all eat chicken etc. What are the Chicken's and other animals we eat eatting???? They now also found in Australia that some corn meal is contaminated with the same substance. It really makes you wonder just how intelligent are the people running our country anyway???
So far the only kibble I have not heard rumored to be affected is Innova and Origen. Both do not contain grains and this is what I feed the foster dogs and have always recommended to adoptive homes. I just always felt safer being able to understand everything that was on the ingrediet list and most I eat myself. Most people once you explain that it really doesn't cost any more than a lesser dog food because you feed half the amount and pick up way less poo it becomes a non issue.
I don't currently have a pet but I think this whole thing is horrifying. There should be better regulations and standards in place to keep pet food safe!
Maybe I am getting warped, but in one way I am very glad pet food issues are finally coming out and that hopefully more and more animals will be taken off that prcessed crap and get some decent food to eat for a change. (stories here are that the raw store sales are up 30% since the first recalls).
I know people don't intentinally feed to be harmful and are doing their best and I did kibble feed my last dog, but now that I know better I can only hope others learn too. It's sure one way never to have to worry about what we are and aren't being told about ingredients.
Odd it's the very ingredients that dogs and especially cats do not eat in nature that is the stuff that is poisoned. If it wasn't in their food to start with, it would never have been an issue. Here's hoping this is the end of grains of any description being allowed in pet foods.
