I recently bought an Annabelle hydrangea but as soon as I planted it, I started seeing brown spots on some of the flowers, they were drying out, slowly and it seems I've lost half of the plant which was rather large when I bought it, paid 40 dollars for it.
I called Sheridan Nurseries where I bought it from and was told because of the heat we've been having it's showing distress. I've been watering it and gave it food for transplant but in vain. In fact, more stems are just getting brown now from the bottom. Anyway, I was told if I wasn't happy with it, I could return it but I really feel stupid taking it and maybe it's not going to die on me.
Should I return it, or is there still hope it will survive......has anyone ever seen this kind of problem?

Lovely plant..it is soooo....shiny & the vase looks great with your decor . :)
Here's a picture of the new plant and planter
I returned the Annabelle hydrangea today and when I took a look around Sheridan theirs were not any better than mine
I ended up getting an indoor low light house plant, a Red Emerald Philodendron. It's absolutely gorgeous and got a nice huge planter to go with it. It's an easy-care plant.
I have it on my landing going up the stairs because my palm had died a while ago and never replaced it because I couldn't find anything suitable for the area.
Forgot to say....the Endless summer hydrangea is the Blushing Bride one and as lovely as it looks I didn't buy it because the white flowers then turn to pink and I wanted only white, so now I'll wait till I see new Annabelle's for sale and then for sure I'll get one. :)
Good to know! It is in a partly shaded area and so far it's doing great. It's been in the ground for about 3 weeks now and seems happy with it's home.
I love Hydrangeas and am pleased that you will have the one you wanted. Even though they say that they are shade lovers I find that they thrive in part sun and part shade.
I loved seeing your home and look forward to seeing your landscaping. I'm sure it's lovely.
I think that's a lot to pay for an Annabelle. I have many of them and they really require little maintenance. As long as they are watered they are happy. They do like lots of water.
Most of my garden is made up of Hydrangeas.
I just remembered there is a new white one out called Blushing Bride and it's a beautiful white. I got one last week. It's the most lovely one I have seen. They are at Sheridan for 40.00 to 50.00 and all of their plants should be on sale now so you will be able to get it for less hopefully. You can find them in with the Endless Summer ones.
I have returned some plants to them that have not worked and they are very good about it.
Yay! I just planted a peejee hydrangea. No blossoms yet or probably this year but it is the white that you mentioned. I'm glad that you recommend it, I have NO CLUE with landscaping so it's nice to have some feedback. It seems like landscaping is just a live and learn experiece. lol
I used to have a Peegee Hydrangea many years ago and it was in the shade and I used to get an abundance of flowers and used to cut some to take indoors over the winter....dried ones look just as nice, but alas, I killed it by overpruning one time.
It's just lately doing my summer walks I noticed some people have loads of them and they look absolutely gorgeous.....I love white flowers to start with, so this is how I got my Annabelle hydrangea, it was an impromptu thing to do and never thought of shade or heat.
It's been raining cats and dogs here and wouldn't even dream of stepping in the garden right now but hopefully I'll dig it up next week and return it, after all the salesperson told me I could if I'm not still happy with the way it turned up.
I will definitely look for one for the shade because the spot I chose for it is in full sun.
Thanks again for all your responses and do share pictures as I love to see flowers always.
I have 3 different types of hydrangeas in my garden, one being a Annabelle. Mine is in full shade all day, I also used the Transplanter. It is the first plant in my garden to wilt when hot, it is my water-now indicator.
Is your Annabelle in full shade? It likes shade, whereas the other kinds like Pee Gee or Endless Summer like a bit more sun.
Planting in July in the heat is going to stress the plant out. Most planting should be done before July, or again in September.
You could take it back, or move it to a more suitable spot and wait to see if it thrives next spring. Sheridan has a 2 year return policy.
I made a mistake :o The hydrangea I bought was a peegee(Gladfloria)...I paid $13.99 at Canadian Tire...it is full of bloom right now :)
I bought an Anna Belle for $20 last summer and it was about 2' high in the pot. This year it is 4' and has many blooms.
Hope you get one you are satisfied with. :)
I also have a Kyushu that a friend grew from seed and I planted it at 1 ' tall and now it has buds and is 3' tall.
I would return it and get an endless summer or a Peegee Hydrangea. The PeeGee will be creamy white. It will be a bit pink in the autumn.

I think the best thing to do is to return it then because the reason I bought this plant is because I love the white blooms from July till October and from the looks of it, I won't have one bloom left in a few days :hairpull:
Thanks for your response.
Hi Luvtodecorate:I bought an Annabelle in the early summer...planted &watered it.It did not show any signs of distress,,,it now has small buds on it...mine did not have flowers on it when purchased so was probably a smaller plant than yours.
I think I would return yours & maybe get a smaller one.I do think it is normal for plants to go into shock when being transplanted especially if they already have blooms....it just may come back though if given time to root :)
