OK

on my north side in shade I plant tuberous begonias every summer and they do very well. Not perennials, though, if that is what you want.
the latin name is 'primula' (your variety is 'jessica') but the common name of the family (often including more than 'primula') is primrose.
sorry, buttercup...those flowers i posted are called primula 'jessica', not primrose (very similar names...i am new to all this too) ;)
i have primrose in containers on my front proch. is is northfacing and gets no sun at all. the flowers just keep blooming and blooming - i am so happy!!! (there are purple ones there too but you cannot see them b/c it's too dark). got them at loblaws. i am very impressed with them and highly recommend them. btw, they are perennials...
here's a pic:
Here's a close-up of the flowers on my plant. It actually bloomed twice last year -- when I planted it in June or July, and then again in August or September.
Here's a pic of Dreamer's plant.....
Impatiens should grow OK in total shade. They come in lots of nice colours, and are pretty much maintenance-free -- you don't even need to deadhead!!
I think Dreamer is the one who posted a picture of one of her perennials that likes shade. It's called Corydalis. I bought one last year, and it's started sprouting a bunch of new shoots this spring. I'll see if I can find a picture.....
I take it you mean total shade? I would search at perennials.com
and see what they suggest. Some annuals will grow in total shade but not many. Ferns, lily valley, impatients, snow on mountain.
