We are thinking of doing up a large hanging basket for our sister in law for her bday coming up at the beginning of August. Can you suggest any flowers that would do well and take the basket into mid-late fall?
Her and my bro-in-law are just coming back from their honeymoon and haven't been able to really enjoy their new garden yet, so I thought that a huge basket would be nice for them.

thanks for the cdn tire update! I think that I will try to put something cute together with whatever I can find that may take the basket into fall :)
well to my surprise while at Can. Tire today I saw for $3. gerber daisies and very healthy looking. Also some dahlia's for $3. both in 6" pots. I did not see ormamental cabbage, but a few geraniums- Martha Washinton and Vancouver.
Hope you find something
I was thinking of more of autumn things - like cabbage ;) Last year I saw all the nice restaurants with cabbages in their planters/baskets etc. and I thought that I could do something with that. I love the idea of herbs, but she made me a herb garden for my bday this year. Thanks for your ideas! I think that I'll go to a garden store soon and see what I can find :)
If there are any ideas out there, let me know and I'll keep you posted !
annuals, I have just done some baskets myself as I am so far behind this year with landscaping yard, etc. I have been very happy to find "jumbo annuals" excellent condition for Cheap! Especially sunshine impatiens, (and the shade variety) as well as begonias...I would add small houseplants such as spider, trailing ivy, asparugus fern to a colourful asst of the best looking annuals you can find. I am not far from TO and I am sure you would have a Terra or Holland Park near you. Even a Canadian Tire in Ancaster was selling lilies, hosta, forsythia, and other perennials for 3.99! In our area, at least the garden centers seem to still a good assortment of healthy plants...I have bought a couple of hanging baskets that I just carved up and added stuff to...another idea would be a basket of herbs if she is a cook, Parsley, dill, basil, and chives look pretty together...I would hate to think that it is too late for summer flowers...and I am sure your thoughtful gift will be appreciated.
with foxxy. All my baskets are annuals and it would be very difficult to find good plants now. I was thinking of maybe irvy geraniums, they usually last the longest. Unfortunately I can not help you with names others than the ones I'm growing and they are mostly annuals. No Diva status for me, please!

you may be in trouble finding annuals now it is so late in the season and what is there will be in sad shape. Is the basket going in the sun or shade outside?
Personally I would would fill it with house plants as you will be able to find those easily. Some trailing ivy and and another trailing with maybe white on the leaves. A couple bloomimg plants to go with it, that can be hung later inside. Another idea is a dessert garden on a large shallow saucer with coloured rocks over the earth. Buy soil for cactus and succulents and plant just a variety of those as they can be bought easily now too. Add a couple of decorations and it can go in sun/part shade and later be in the house.
Hope this helps.
