I often see them in the busy city (Toronto & Montreal) perched in city street lined trees and taking a nap on a tall street lights above.
It is often walking dogs that alert me to look up. They spot 'em and I couldn't understand why the dogs are so interested in looking up so often.
In the suburbs where I am, I was telling friends that we don't have them.
Funny enough a few weeks ago, I looked out my front window and saw two 'coons crossing one yard to the other side of the street and visit another house only to scamper across the road to another lawn.
When I lived in the city, it took me a while to figure out why my very tight fitting rubbermaid garbage lid had an interesting pattern of holes and scratches.
It was only when one night I caught two of them perched on top of it desperately trying to get inside. They ran across the street and I followed them as they discovered a neighbours large garbage bag on their 2nd floor verranda/patio. It only took them a few minutes to have made a hole and it was so funny as I watched them get covered in dirty kitty litter which came pouring out of the holes they made. Yikes, what a mess they made as the soiled litter came pouring down onto the ground below.
But they sure are cute and fun to watch them waddle.
me and my friend call Racoons Canadian Monkeys cause we see them in the trees all the time at Stanley Park here in Vancovuer
that thing is fine up there
Thanks Lisa....I won''t have any fishies this year so it will not be as nice. I will just have a water feature of some sort.I was thinking of a waterfall .Does anyone have any other suggestions?I love your pictures of the raccoons .You should enter them in a photo contest.:)
Just wanted to comment that I love your pond! Your backyard (from what I can see) looks beautiful!
For something so cute they can be so destructive. Friends of ours had them settle into the walls of their home. They somehow dug a hole into the wall through the garage and settled in for the winter, had babies and the racoons decided it was their home. They had a really hard time getting them out of there and the damage was costly. The humane society were not very helpful either......what a mess. Cute but destructive.
He is still up in the tree....."The Little Rascals "ate all of my beautiful goldfish(pics below) from the pond last summer so I do not have alot of love for them.
Our neighbors have a racoon that has decided to move into their eaves just above the living room window. The thing pryed open the eaves (somehow) and really caused alot of damage. He has come for visits to our yard...as far as I can tell it's just to knock over our garbage and have a munch. It amazes me how they can unlock the garbage can lids! Rascals!
We always have racoons...and bunnies in our backyard.
I said to my DH just look how cute they are! (Even though they are a PITA knocking over the garbage cans) He said, yeah, real cute, until they try to claw your eyes out:rolleyes:
Here are some pics from last summer...this little guy just enjoying the heat and laying in the sun on our garage. (garage is in backyard/laneway) Mocha loves it when they come to visit too...lots to bark at!
Raccons are pretty smart and I'm sure when it wants to come down it will. They climb better than cats at least so it shouldn't be unable to come down, maybe it just wanted to get away for some alone time away from the rest of the family :)
