Basement finishing

Hi...this is the first time I'm posting, but all the messages here are great!

Has anyone in the forum completed a basement finishing project? We will be starting one in the next couple of months, and I'm interested in reading your experiences.

- drywall ceiling vs. drop/tile
- flooring
- window enlargments
- removing stairway outer wall
- etc.

Any stories or pictures appreciated!
Cheers.

My husband and I are currently doing our basement after a broken pipe flooded our basement before Christmas. It had green foam backed carpet and wood panelling (not the nice kind). Last night we installed 5 pot lights in the ceiling. We will need a few more though. We are planning to drywall the walls. The ceiling is another story though. We have limited ceiling space. We plan on putting up pine boards on the ceiling. We saw this on "Trading Spaces" and it looked really nice. It's a bit expensive but the 4 inch boards, when stained will warm up the room. (We are buying the pine packages from a home improvement store). We are putting a berber on the floor, as we have small children that will be playing down there. I'm undecided as to the paint colors still, but we are a few weeks away from that. I did find some tips about basements, but I can't remember the site. A few suggestions from it are:
1) use anything but flourescent lighting - it's too harsh
2) use pillars when possible, to keep the room open.
3) put as large as possible windows in to allow for natural light
4) use french doors and mirrors to create space

Sorry, but that's all I can remember. I'll see if I can find the site.

Keep warm - it's -42 here this morning, with the wind -52. Brrrrrrrrr . . . .

That's so funny that you mention this. We are currently renovating our basement. Where the stairs come down, we knocked out that wall to make room for furniture coming down the stairs - who thinks these things out anyway - couldn't even get a sofa down the stairway. We ripped up the old subfloor and put in a new one. We didn't do our windows but we bought new blinds. hehehe... we put in a drop tile ceiling. What were you looking to find out?
