Hey everyone!

Has anyone ever done their basement from the concrete up? So far we are installing drywall. Got the link from previous post, it'll be loads of help.

I am also putting in a 2pc washroom and need some planning advice... how much room, where to position etc.. Any advice for this kind of project...

Thanks!

It's slow going so far, drywall is almost up. I did get a permit for the electrical, which was advised by my contractor.

unfortunatley our house did not have a rough in for a washroom in the basement. I am searching for the right plumber to do the job. I now understand the 2 truths about renos 1- always takes longer 2- it always costs more $$
LOL

Our basement is almost done now. We had the rough in for the bathroom done when we had the house built a couple years ago. The layout of the bathroom was decided when we built the house.

As far as the other work we did some of the work and hired trades for some as well.

My biggest advice is get a building permit and do it all legally. We talked to our Realtor and having inpsections makes a huge diference to resale value and buyer confidence.

The other advice from our Realtor was to make the basement the same style and quality as upstairs. Having an ultra modern basment with a simple older upstairs isn't good nor is having a cheap basement with a really fancy upstairs. We have the same carpet, doors, and trim. The walls will be lighter and sunnier, but flow from upstairs with the same colour trim.

As far as supplies go shop around. We found drywall cheaper at the drywall store. Carpet cheaper at HD with our own carpet installer. One door was $500 cheaper at Mara Lumber than HD (solid core door for media room)

If you are just at the start of the project consider things that need to be done first. We installed the wires and copper for A/C, so we can add it later if we want to. We also had some ductwork moved, because it was in the way for the Media Room. We decided not to add lines for a natural gas BBQ or hot tub.

Oh yes and if you have a digital camera take pictures of everything as you go. It was really helpful to look back for studs or wires etc as we went.

Did you have any specific questions? I might be able to help.
