Bathroom Flooring Ideas

We will be doing some renovating on a house that we move into in March. I am having a hard time deciding what to put on the floor in the main upstairs washroom. Right now the owners have carpet, thats gotta go.....the connecting hallway has very dark hardwood, hubby suggested putting hardwood in the bathroom, would I have to match the existing hardwood in the hallway?? or would a completely different color, like a really light hardwood against the darker color in the hall be ok??

I'm getting tired of ceramic tiles, but if I can't come up with something else, it just might have to be ceramic tiles.

Do anyone have any ideas of other flooring options??

I've seen Debbie Travis use cork in a bathroom. She did state it's not actually intended for moisture prone areas, so she had the click flooring sealed.

I don't know if this worked well during practical use, but it's something you could ask a flooring expert to find out if it's a good idea or not.

hope this helps,

Thanks for all your great comments. I'm still undecided with what flooring to use. I think I'll have to make a trip down to the city and shop around. I was looking at 'cork' flooring on the net, think I might try to see it for myself.

I would prefer to use the sheet vinyl, but hubby refuses to even consider it. I know the quality and patterns that are now available are lovely, not the stuff from his childhood.

Guess I keep looking....if all else fails, we can always go with ceramic tile.

I have hardwood in my bathroom too (but no kids) and I love it. I also have hardwood in my entrance way. Its a bit more challenge to manage cleaningwise - but i have no regrets.

Denise, I have had hardwood in the bathroom, with no issues..(no kids)
I love the look.
Personally speaking, I would match to hallway.

A new type of sheet flooring is called Fibrefloor by Tarket, it's currently only available at End of the Roll right now though. There are hundreds of different styles to choose from. It's basically cushier than regular sheet flooring.

as they are good with any water issues and you can even get them in a slate look - have a look at them - I would not however choose hardwood in the bathroom - water would make a mess of it!! :p

I really like sheet vinyl flooring. I like the higher-end designs that look just like real stone. Unless you absolutely hate it, check out the realistic patterns that are available now. We got some for both our main bathroom and our kitchen, and we are very pleased with it.

Welcome to the board. I wouldn't suggest hardwood floor for a bathroom because of the water issue, especially if there are any children using the same bathroom.

I personally prefer ceramic tiles in a bathroom because they are so refreshing in a bathroom and easy to clean. If you want, you can always put heating rods underneath to warm up the floor.

If you still prefer to put hardwood floor, then if it's a lighter colour than what you have in the hallway is o.k.

That's my opinion. :)
