Bathroom Sink Cabinet

I am trying to build a cabinet for my new bathroom sink. I built one out of 3/4" mdf, but didn't like how thin and flimsy it looked. I would like something a bit chunkier - any ideas? I don't really have any tools like a rip saw, so I have to get everything cut at Home Depot, and depending on what kind of mood the salesrep is in...well, you know what I mean. I'd hire someone to build it for me, but I don't know who to call. HELP!

Instead of Home Depot why don't you try somewhere like Winsor Plywood. I don't know where you live, but there must be other wood stores besides Home Depot. Their wood is of the poorest quality (not sure if you can get bad MDF). Windsor Plywood has loads of experienced guys (not someone just graduating from cashier college) and can even recommend a carpenter if you are unsure how to proceed yourself. We looked into it for a mantle and they were awsome.

Also, Ikea has some premade cabinets that you may be able to remodle into a workable solution. They also have countertops and handles at a very reasonable price.

Guess I should have said that I live in Toronto. I looked up Winsor Plywood, and the only one in Ontario is Thunder Bay. However, I'll look up similar stores in this area and see if I can find anything. Thanks for the directional advice.

I was thinking could you not add trim to it out of the 3/4 inch MDF to make it look shaker style just to add some weight and strength to it. Put a extra trim under the topside to give it the look of 1 1/2 thick top if you have a over hang. This is what they do to your kitchen counter tops. MDF is heavy and does not do well where there is water it will swell up if it gets wet so be sure and cover the top with a laminate of some sort.

good for you trying to build something for yourself - very satisfying when it works, but frastrating when it doesn't, as I am sure you have found out!

You could try bracing the cabinet you have with something chunkier inside, gives you a mice "thick" look when done, woodfilled and painted; or you could scour the second-hand stores etc. for a dresser or something that is a suitable height and cut a hole in it.

I bought DH (dear husband, in case you are new at this) a small jigsaw at
canadian Tire or Home Depot for $25, and although not great for big jobs, it did us for a few years when we were living in an apartment. May be cheaper than getting wood cut at Home Depot in the long run !

Also, check out other web sites, I am thinking of Peter Fallico's, do a google on "Home to Go" or find he link at HGTV's site.

Good luck !

Homehardware/Build it Centre has prefab bathroom vanities. I think they are resonable.
