Bathroom tiles scream 'paint me!'

We have an issue with the tiles in our bathroom... they are ugly! And just out of date. I know some people that have fairly successfully painted tiles on a backsplash but how about in the shower/tub area?

We plan to someday completely redo the bathroom (new cabinets, counter, floor and retile). But it's not in the budget yet (thanks to having to remove the remainder of the knob and tube wiring in our house built in 1923). So we're looking for a quick fix. The tiles were almost ok - most are a plain greyish white colour but there are two rows that have flowers on them that are peach and sort of a greyish mint green colour. And then in some areas they've used a trim tile of a greyish mauve.

I just don't know what to do with it. If we try to work with the tiles I don't want to go near the peach colour. I don't mind the idea of a greyish mauve with a nice crisp white. Kind of a spa type look. But I'm not sure it would be good with the greyish white tiles.

I really hate the peach flowers! :o

If anyone can offer some direction it would be greatly appreciated!

I typed out a reply to this but now it's not there... perhaps i forgot to hit 'submit'!

The mirror moved out with the previous owners ;) Since we moved in last Sept we have been using a little 1'x1' mirror! We finally found one that we liked though and it's now up! Thankfully!

I've never heard of this epoxy tile paint. I'll look into that for sure. Thanks for the tip!

The more I think about the tub surround the more I think it may not be the way to go for us. Eventually we will be completely redoing the bathroom and I would like to retile the bathtub area with something simple but in a funkier colour. I was thinking about using those glass tiles in a funky but soothing colour (a pale wasabi green maybe??). I have a feeling that the tub surround would be pricey enough that we wouldn't want to just rip it back out again in a year...

Or maybe we'll stick with plain white tiles and just paint the walls in the funkier colour. I suppose as our tastes change that would be more practical. But I love those coloured glass tiles! Decisions, decisions...

We followed the instructions on the container (I think TSP cleaning, etc)- i think it was epoxy paint but can't be absolute certain - it was over 9 years and two houses ago. I do remember it stood up for the 2 years that we lived there.

Fray,
we used tub paint and painted over our tiles around the tub surround and for that matter the entire bathroom. The tiles at the time were lime green and white. We just left the white ones and painted the lime green.
Just make sure you apply VERY thin coats and have lots of drying time in between (at least 24 hours if not more).
good luck!

on what style you want and the material. They have a few choices. Paint is cheaper, but the insert is lasting. Call and get a quote. I think they still have a special on - one of my clients got a special on financing the project over time with them and saved a few dollars.

I should have thought of that myself!

Is it fairly cheap to have that installed?

to call Bath Fitters and have a surround made in white or ivory. It makes ugly tile disappear. Paint will eventually peel. It is only a temporary fix. As for the little backsplash, you could cover it with steel, a box shelf, or just remove that part and re-do.

For the record, these pictures were taken by the previous owners. We have replaced the mirror with a more modern brushed nickel pivot style mirror and all the decorations you see are gone. Our taste tends to be more modern that the previous owner's.
