I have a new ivory matelasse duvet cover with matching shams and box pleated bedskirt. I want to redo my room using a claret red on one wall and perhaps an ivory on the others. I want to incorporate red and black. I have a black wrought iron bench with an inset cushion that could be reupholstered. Any ideas?
I'm also wondering about any ways to update my bedroom set which is from the early 70's (long, mirrored dresser w/9 drawers and 5" legs). I was thinking of purchasing a new headboard.

You can paint over stained wood. Here are some suggestions from a paint website:
Surface Preparation:
* remove all loose or poorly adhering stain, and weathered wood fibers by scraping, or by careful hand wire brushing using a stiff metal wire brush going with the grain of the wood; wear eye protection, work gloves and a dust mask
* remove dirt, chalk, dust, residual particles of stain, treated mildew, etc. by scrubbing with detergent and water, rinse thoroughly
Priming:
* after preparing the surface, apply a quality stain blocking latex or oil-based primer
* do not leave primer unpainted
Painting:
* paint with latex or oil based paint
* use quality oil-based primer and paint if surface has build-up of old oil-based stain
* do not apply oil-based paint over latex stain
It sounds like you are going for a more contemporary look - you can always restain it a dark chocolate brown, that look is very in right now. Or paint it an ivory color so it fits in with the new bedding.
Have you found a fabric you like for the cushion and windows? I would use a wrought iron rod to hang the side panels so that it ties in with your bench.
I'd love to see a picture when it's done!
Thank you Karajean. Do you have any suggestions for painting my bedroom suite. This is as I mentioned from the early 70's but still in good condition. I really never thought about doing anything until my daughter suggested that I update it somehow. It's a wood stain and I can't imagine painting it. Any suggestions? New knobs sound like a good idea. As to the red wall, that's what I had in mind. Right now that wall is a dusty lilac color.
I would paint the wall that has the bed on it the red to make it a feature wall - or color block around the head board.
Paint and new knobs make a huge difference on old furniture.
Hard what else to say without seeing a picture of the room - good luck!
