Ok so every house I have lived in with hardwood floors - the floor by the front door takes a lot of abuse and you want to be careful about what to put on the wood to protect it. Short of pulling out wood and having a tile section................what kind of mat do folks use that does not scratch up or react with today's finishes?

Yes, a little rug is a simple solution. Do watch as the rubber backed ones are not recommended on wood floors so those non-slip undermats are necessary (and make sure they say on package they are safe for wood).
In my house I have braided rag rugs, nice woven rugs, and simple cotton rugs. All of them can go in the washing machine and are pretty thick in case any snow comes in on boots. They can be hard to find without that rubber backing but you will find them.
I agree with Nana24 as I have an older home with front door entry right into living room (todate)- Inexpensive Canadian Tire rug. It has worked well!!! I did have one with a rubber backing attached and it did not last. Moisture must have build up as the backing dissolved but no harm to the floor.
Any area rug will work - just make sure you put down a piece of non slip floor protector then the backing on the rug wont scratch your floor. You could get a light colour for the summer months & a dark one for the winter. Buy a 3' x 5' or bigger if the area is big enough. Good luck.
