Birch tree dilemma

I have a tree dilemma and I'm not sure what I should do. I really want a clumping birch tree in our front yard. The owner of the nursery that I go to recommended a Whitespire Birch. So, I went to the nursery on Saturday in search of a clumping Whitespire. Turns out that the three they had gotten in recently have already been sold :( So, I decided to by a single-trunk Whitespire instead. It's a lovely tree -- probably between 15-20 feet high, which gives it a jump on catching up to the huge trees in our neighbourhood!!

But...... I still REALLY want a clump birch!! So I contacted the nursery owner and asked him if he'll be ordering in anymore clumping Whitespires. He said that he probably won't be ordering any more this year. When you get large trees late in the season, they're much more stressed and are therefore more susceptible to insect damage. It's safer to only order them in the spring and take care of them from then on than getting them shipped during the season.

So now I have to decide.... do I stick with the Whitespire that I bought, or wait another year and buy a clumping one next spring and call to cancel the tree that I bought?? The single-trunk tree IS pretty..... but it's not cheap!! And it's not like I can return it a couple of weeks after it's delivered if I decide I don't want it!!

Good for you for waiting. I started reading the post and then noticed the 2006 date. Scrolled right to the bottom to see why it was active again. I'm so impatient I never would have waited. You did the right thing.

Great news! I'm sure it was worth the wait to get the exact tree you wanted wasn't it! You'll have to post some pictures once it's in!! :clapping:

Well, I waited a year, and I FINALLY have my clumping Whitespire Birch!! :confetti: I called the nursery yesterday to ask if they had any in stock, and they said they had a couple. So I went to the nursery after work and picked my tree and it's going to be delivered next week. Yay!! :bliss:

It's not normal to be so obsessed over a tree, is it??

Not yet.... but I will, in case somebody else has the tree that I want!! Although I suspect that I may not have much luck -- but I don't know if I don't try, right?!

Well, my tree order is cancelled :( I SO want a birch tree NOW, but I'll wait till I can get exactly what I want. *Sigh* Why do I always have to like what's expensive or unavailable?!?!??!

You're all right...... better to wait and get what I really want. Like you said Mel, it isn't a shurb or a plant -- it's a HUGE TREE!!!!

Yep, itsjustme, that's the kind of birch I want :) I think the tree in the picture has multiple trunks?? I see at least two, I'm pretty sure....

Maybe I'll call around and see if any other garden centres have clumping Whitespires in stock.....

Thanks for helping -- I know cancelling the tree is the best thing to do. I just needed that extra reinforcement to do it!!

I would wait until next year and get the one I really want or it will always bug you and you'll never be really happy with it.

There is a beautiful birch nearby. Is this the type? I agree with Mel, and wait until you can get what you really want.

Smoodgie...I know its really really hard to do this..but I think you should WAIT!!! Call and cancel the birch and order the one you want next spring..its not like its a lil tiny flower/shrub of some sort you can just rip up and throw away if you aren't satisfied..a mature tree purchase is a HUGE purchase. So..wait wait wait..sorry.
:) Mel
