The Black Hollyhock experiment

Dawn's picture

I planted black hollyhock seeds last year, which don't bloom the first year. Finally I have the beginning of blooms, and they are very nice. I'm not terribly fond of the rust I have on the leaves/stalks, which can be treated with a spray. Oh well, it was fun. The ones shown behind a California Lilac will display best, as the worst of the rust is hidden.

It won't flower the first year, it will just be leaves. It will bloom next season. I know because I've been waiting! If bought from a nursery as a plant, it could be in its second year though.

that is an incredible black flower! I am now even more anxious for mine to flower, although this is the first year in so maybe it won't flower till next year?
hopefully it will be ok, seems as if something is eating the leaves, they are full of holes and quite unsightly looking, but still growing quite fast:)

I'll be looking forward to your picture. Neighbours have one in the most beautiful red! Do you have the rust problem on yours?

Dawn I love the dark coloured hollyhock.....I have a gigantic one growing this year and it's not in an area where it should be, right now it's more to the front of the bed and hasn't flowered yet, so I don't know what colour it is because I do remember putting some seeds from the dark coloured ones....will post as soon as I get a flower.
