I am wondering how long I should wait for my paint to dry!

I know that sounds funny--I am painting a room with sloped ceilings. I've decided to carry the wall colour up the slope: but stop when it "flattens" out to the ceiling. Here, I will have to tape over my brand new paint job in order to roll on the ceiling paint. How long should I wait to tape the ceiling? I'm thinking maybe 72 hours?

I've waited maybe 24h in the past--just to have the darn stuff peel off with the tape when it came time to remove it!

Any thoughts?

TIA!

you could do like us, cross your fingers & use low tack tape. We just finished painting the bathroom. After priming we painted the ceiling, wainscotting & trim, then about 24 hours after the last coat, we applied low tack tape (purple). The tape stayed on roughly 48hrs before pulling off easily with no problem. It can be done if you are impatient & a tad careful.

Sorry if my winging came off as ungrateful! I'm not at all! Yep: No 90" angle--more like 45!

No, I just envisioned having everything done sooner, that's all! It's quite taken my enthusiasm! Well, that and the fact that it's hot and I'm tired today. I want to do the whole room with two coats of primer before I do the colour.....I've cut in for the primer....but now I'm stalling. I have to do one half the room, stop, move the beds, and then do the other half.

Oops, sorry, whining again! Hey--at least I'm not laying a hardwood floor on the diagonal! Now THAT takes patience!

Thanks Brenda. :)

with the ceiling, you may not have to tape. You should be able to cut in a nice line without tape. Or did I read that your ceiling is not at a 90 degree angle tot he wall that is a little more difficult.

Yes, the tape will stick to the fresh paint and could pull it off if you don't let it cure enough. Even the lowest tack tapes could be a problem. Just trying to save you a BIG headache later.:D

I haven't started the walls!
But I've got the paint!

And I'm still hemming and hawing over which white to pick for the ceiling!

OK: so paint the ceiling first, grumble grumble--peel the tape off right after painting--then wait TWO WEEKS to do the walls?

re-tape--paint, take tape off right away? Is that it?

I agree and should have stated to paint the ceiling first if you haven't started the walls already. I may have misread and thought you had already painted the walls.

to paint the ceiling first and then cut in the walls. If you are using tape wait 2 weeks. Paint takes 30 days to cure. Remove the tape while the paint is wet or it will form a bond with the wall and rip a huge piece of your paint off.:(

If you have a good brush and patience, try cutting in the edges with the brush and then roll. I find it does a better job than using tape. I have vowed never to tape off again. Goes much quicker and the lines are more even.

Remember a good beveled 2 - 2 1/2 inch brush and patience.

You can do it.
