Can anyone suggest a safe but good deterrent for cats in the garden?

I just came home from dropping off my son at school...only to see what I think is cat poop in my front garden's soil. I'm afraid that if now the "territory" is marked, we'll be dealing with a "regular" visitor.

Any natural and safe remedies to prevent further visits?

If you do go for the pepper and moth ball remedy know that they are regarded as cruel. The pepper can get in their eyes (from their paws) and they can lose their sight (eyes get taken out) if it goes too far, never mind it just plain hurts. Mothballs are also considered dangerous to our own health so something with that small a body (never mind birds if they are picking them up) could be made very ill.

Citrus peels are a good one, they hate them.

I was thinking of the same thing plus I don't want my son to be affected. My neighbour said that they bought a gadget that has a sound deterrent on it so I think I will try it. She said it was successful.

I must check out the YouTube video...:)

We bought a motion activated sprinkler this year as the Raccoons kept popping our inflatable kids pool in the yard. It works like a charm. The box says that it will work for cats as well.

Thanks so much for the ideas. I always have lemons and limes on the go -- we usually compost them -- but I'll put them into the garden. I'll also try the cayenne pepper and moth balls, if the lemon and lime discards don't work.

I really don't want to be mucking around poop my garden. Last summer, a cat used our neighbour's front garden bed regularly. Not fun to deal with...

Try citrus peels. Instead of discarding your lemon/limes, orange/grapefruit peels

I haven't met a cat yet that loves the smell. They hate it !!!

& yes cats are creature of their habits and like routine so if it is one kitty that enjoys this spot - I trust they will be back for future visits.

Moth balls work wonders. I put them in my window wells and along the ground level windows kinda under the mulch/dirt to stop the neighbourhood cats from spraying and it worked for cats. What is weird is that the crows/blackbirds would see the white mothballs and go and pick them up and fly off but then realize that it was not food and drop it so I would look out on the lawn and see these white moth balls laying all around. It is the smell that deters them so make sure the moth ball is buried under the mulch so no little kids see it and think it is candy. :p Hope this helps
