I bought a house a 3 years ago, and every year I am surprised to see new flowers show up in my borders. This year, I noticed this flower (attached) for the first time. Is it a weed? Can someone identify it?
Thanks!

I think you may mean the Canada Thistle, which is a weed from hell.I just finished clearing out a very large patch of these, what a pain these are and I don't just mean in the fingers from getting stuck by them. The globe thistle on the other hand is a very well behaved garden plant that has an upright growth habit, and are topped with round blue flower heads that are about the size of a golfball.Very nice plants and very hardy.
I thought those things spread like wildfire????
I have 2 in the garden and though it a weed as well then thought I'd wait and see and nice blue/purple flowers now.....glad I did not yank it out last spring. Thanks Molly for info.
Thanks a lot for your quick response.
I really like its flowers, but the foliage looks more like weeds... I guess this one survived only because I didn't pay too much attention to that border this year. I probably pulled out the other ones last year before they had a chance to flower...
It is Echinops or better known as " Globe Thistle".This is a wonderful plant and it will keep getting more full each year.Very hardy plant.
